I select the area, burn tool obviously, then on a layer above it (assuming you're using photoshop) I fill in the still selected area using the paintbrush with the person's skin color, then set the layer filter to Overlay. I found it out from just messing around actually.

OP, when you choose skin tone, do you use the option button picker? also, what do you adjust after applying overlay besides contrast? and, finally, how much burn do you use? are you just looking for shadows? my biggest issue is matching the skin tone well enough
