I go about every 3 days. Hair comes in silky smooth and not all coarse and itchy. No razor burn from conditioner either. I use a Gilette Fusion Power as well, and this trick works great.

Plus it gets easier over time, I usually wax the top portion, back of my balls, and the sides, then manually pluck the ball hair and the stuff too close to my dick to wax

After like 6-7 times doing it the follicles get really weak and as long as you keep it up it just gets easier and less painful each time.

I think it's dependent on the type of skin you have. If it gets irritated then it'll keep getting irritated every time you do it. Even if you wax you're probably going to have all of the same problems with hair regrowth that you'd get with shaving. Cut it short, don't go fully smooth.

Soak the hair for a few minutes first, use plenty of shaving cream, don't shave against the grain, don't run the razor blade over the same spot again and again.

Not sure if you're already doing this, but make sure the water is ice cold. Warm water dulls the blade, making it snag. Immediately after you shave, put a hot towel or washcloth on your crotch and let it sit there until its not warm anymore. Then, gently dry and apply lotion. After the lotion is completely absorbed, a little bit of baby powder. Works every time.

Alright. Proper shaving advice!

First, the proper razor makes everything easier. I recommend either a safety razor (old school) or the Gillette mach 3. A good razor, first and foremost, should be easily cleaned. I won't get into details in regard to a safety razor. The mach 3 has slightly further apart blade spacing than most razors. That, and it's open back design, allow for the razor to be flushed from hair with little effort. Also, the blade spacing, in my opinion, allows for a better shave (a scientifically unsubstantiated claim).
Next, get cheap barbasol foam cream. Not gel, not oatmeal bullshit. The foam makes for a safer and smoother shave. However, for the closest, smoothest shave, hair conditioner is unbeatable. It smooths the hair, smooths the skin, lubricates, and doesn't wash off as easily in water.

Lastly, a good mesh loofah. It's an absolute must. The first few uses on your junk will be uncomfortable and maybe too rough for the most sensitive skin. Don't rip your bits off. But a mesh scrub the day after you shave will pull any hairs tangled in skin free, exfoliate, and clean. The best way to eliminate ingrown hairs is easily the cleaning of your stanky crotch, not the razor, technique or shave cream

All these techniques described here might reduce the initial rash of a too agressive shave.
But the true hell are the weeks when the hair grows back and it feels like sandpaper. Every step you take rubs your thighs against each other, which results in rashes even stronger than any initial shaving rash.
So of course you just trim it instead of shavin it completely smooth. This is like shaving 101 here.
