When something gets deleted from the drive, it becomes invisible. It is deleted, sure, but it is still retrievable.
You see, when there is a file on a disc, space is taken and cannot be filled. When it is deleted, it's still actually there, but it is now vulnerable to being overwritten. If your drive isn't at full capacity, chances are the files haven't been overwritten with new information.

When you delete a file, you are basically removing a bookmark that kept the computer of messing with that data. The data is not lost until new data is written to the now "deleted" sectors.
