OP, you're lucky to have been able to directly connect to 4Chan when you started out. Back when I started, we'd have to rely on a local dialup BBS to post all the daily 4Chan posts. (There were usually about 65-70 a day)

This is how I connected to 4Chan in 1983

Someone's not getting it.

And- Did you know that the name "4chan" came from when Moot added a 4th board to his BBS? 4 Channels! The 4th, of course was /R/ and it was the Random board now called /b/. The first 3 boards were:
> Japanimation
> WWF Wrestling (Moot was a HUGE Rowdy Roddy Piper fan)
> Teddy Ruxpin (little known fact, Teddy Ruxpin was what evolved into pedobear)

/R/ was created when the BBS get so much random traffic (like 50 dialup calls a day) and the boards got so much off-topic posts, he added /R/ to keep things neat and tidy.
>>
>>568630207
oh shit did you use a university mainframe or did you actually get a trs-80?! must've cost a fortune either way!
>>
>>568630319

>>
>>568630376
Moot was in college in the late 1970s, and he secretly hosted 4chan on the Penn State Universities PDP-11 mainframe (running RSTS/e). It allowed 64 dialup connections at a time, for the WHOLE university... so Moot only opened the BBS at night, well after hours. But, with no internet, we'd have to either rely on a local BBS to mirror the content or use phreaking tricks to get the free long distance to connect directly. My parents wouldn't allow me to make a blue box, so I read the content locally.

Another piece of trivia- Steve Wozniak was an avid Channer in the late 70s. We'd be posting about Speed Racer and other cool Japanimation stuff and he'd post about his latest projects. Black boxes, blue boxes, how to get free calls from a phone booth, etc. Woz was a big reason Moot created /R/andom.

Woz and Moot were good friends and Woz introduced him to Steve Jobs. In fact, if it weren't for a falling out, Moot would have been involved with the creation of the Apple 1 computer.
>Wox liked cheese pizza, Moot didn't.

>>
>>568630657
In 1980, Moot graduated from MIT and got a job with Xerox. Finally he had the money to really make his own BBS the way he wanted. It was on an IBM with FOUR disk drives. One for the BBS program, email, user info, etc, and the other 3 for the 3 boards. Back then, it was a huge system. He got his first hard drive (5mb) in 1984 and that's when 4chan really took off.

The 5th board (around 1984) was /Adv/. It was all about text adventure games. Moot even hosted /Saves/. Saves was not an actual message board, but a place where you could upload your game saves from Scott Adams adventure games so other Channers could get past the hard parts. You saved it as a text file, then converted the extension to .bin and moved it to your game floppy. Boom- you beat the dragon!

I heard another rumor that moot was offered $2500 by Atari to code and troubleshoot what became the infamous ET: The Extra Terrestrial game. But moot was so busy with setting up and running the first-generation version of 4chan that he declined to work on the game before he signed the official contract with Atari. As a result, Atari was left with only two months to throw the game together, and most of you know how that turned out...

Funny you should mention him! Back when moot was still in college Robinett complained to him that most people who played games but weren't familiar with computers had no idea who the actual game developers were. So moot said "well why not just hide your name somewhere in the game? It can be an additional challenge for the hardcore gamers to look for it." And with that, the very first video game Easter egg was created.

It was my second ever computer - my first being a ZX Spectrum +3. My PC had a 20mb HDD and it was years before I got my first "disk full" message.

The green disc was GEM - a shitty Windows clone that I occasionally booted to because it had a decent paint app (before I got hold of Logitech's Paintshow Plus for DOS).

It was on this machine that I graduated from ZX BASIC to GW-BASIC. I got into Borland Turbo C a few years later. Used to make loads of silly little text mode games and other random fun programs.
>>

Some, but I made most of my money cracking game encryption on Apple ][ disks. I sold a lot of warez for $10 a game. Zaxxon, Hitchhikers Guide, Taipan, Sneakers, NORAD... and the first R-rated adventure game, Leather Godesses of Phobos. I sold a LOT of that one.

I know, 2 to 3 months waiting for a game! And back in 1982 a game could cost $40, that's the equivalent of over $100 bucks today. Plus there was no "deluxe editions," no manual, no behind the scenes pics, nothing! All you got was the game and the cardboard box it came in. But it was so worth it to get the Japanese version of Missile Command with the voice simulator.
