It's a minor masterpiece. Not because of how good it is (although I personally think it is), but because of how perfectly it nails what it's going for. Cheesy ghost hunting movies are extremely difficult to make a real success of, but that did it 9/10 easily

I didn't really like Prometheus, but your right in that it's the prequel to Alien.

Event Horizon was about a space ship that has a new propulsion system that allows the ship to leave our universe and basically go to hell. When it comes back, it brings something with it. Really weird idea, but plays out nicely.

>>
>>564133310
Yeah, this. And the whole idea behind it is even worse / better / can't decide. Most torture movies have the tortures doing it for rather mundane reasons, let alone go more over the top. The fact that the tortures in this movie were also largely psychological is what really made me feel uncomfortable, and I don't have that with... well, nearly all movies.
>>
>>564133310
>I'm more creeped out by what people can do than supernatural shit.

Officially it's a paper for movie and television sciences, but I also went into psychology, neurology and philosophy a lot. In the end it became a multi-discipline paper, even though I lack training in a few of the disciplines the paper was really well received.

I can explain more, but I don't want to spoil the movie for you if you didn't see it yet.
>>
>>564133638
I haven't watched the movie, I'm just terrified of the idea of torture... It's strange because it's something that I'm fairly (hopefully) unlikely to experience. Sometimes if I think about it I'm like "Eh, mentally give up, just let them do whatever until you die", but when I see pictures or whatever my mind panics and I'm like "Fuck. No."

Yeah, that scares and angers me. When I see riots I get mad as hell. Settle down fags.

One of the worst things about the idea of dying is knowing if my family is okay, and being able to say goodbye. It's weird but just thinking about how distressed they'd be is terrifying, and if I never got to talk to them before, they'd never have closure.

Never would've thought I'd say that when I was younger, would've said aliens or some shit.

Can anyone recommend me any Grave Encounter like movies?
>>
>>564134317
The basis was simply describing the movie, the styles used, interwoven plots and genres, diegetic elements, the usual cinematography shizzle. What I found more interesting is how the movie portrays the state of the mind under such torture, and how a higher state of consciousness can be achieved through completely disconnecting the mind from the body. In the movie, it's specific torture and degradation that eventually makes the person 'shut down', whereby the body's limits extend to superhuman levels and the process repeats. In the end, the mind operates on an entirely different state of being altogether, technically becoming a new lifeform in and of itself if it's disconnected from the body. A lot of old religions used similar techniques to reach enlightenment, specifically heavy fasting until on the brink of death; the spirit 'leaves' the broken husk of the body and transcends to Nirvana or what have you. Also related are mental illnesses that make the sufferer experience an altogether different version of reality, highly personal yet no less real. That last thing is something I have personal experience with, so the topic of mental worlds has always drawn me.

Yada yada, long story short: I went along with the movie's idea of enlightenment through suffering, and theorized how the mind would operate, if it's realistically possible, and how we should define these higher states of existance while comparing it to the state of mind of people with an alternate view of reality due to illness or trauma. That, and I went into the morality of it all and, because academia, advocated that restraints on human trial experiments will never allow us to perform experiments such as this. Maybe we should try it anyway? There is a lot we don't know about the human body and mind. I kept this part for the discussion-part of my paper (basically, anything goes topkek etc.), and not really taking a stance here, but putting in a good word for it nonetheless.

ending was, of course, shit. but it really freaks me out otherwise.

Wat. It was barely even a horror. Couple of cheap jumpscares. My favourite part of the movie was the soundtrack in the lawnmower scene. The atonal quality made it really uncomfortable.

Nice movie, but it's not good as far as horrors go. I'd say it's like a thriller or something.

Boom, there ya go, yo ass is grass for nothing. The manga/anime Monster has a similar thing for its serial killer, so no real reason except "because I want to, and because I can". Something he only explains after everyone's breaking their head over his reasoning, MO, profile and what have you. I like those kinds of twists, killers don't always need to have some kind of Freud-motive.

I like shit like that too. That's why I really liked Heath Ledgers Joker. Any other titles besides the Strangers that have no motive?

Saw one semi-recently, can't remember title. Basic premise is family of 3 go to house in mountains to get away for a while. Young daughter was killed in car accident a bit ago, only have son left (maybe 11ish). Neighbors are a little too friendly, man + young wife + son. They kill the family's dog and dudes brother when he shows up. End up taking family hostage, forced husband + wife to fuck infront of him, makes wife fuck him. Wife kills dude, cops come, alls well. Anyone know the name?

At any rate it is an extremely interesting concept. I believe that the only way we will unlock more about the brain is under trials like these, but they will probably never happen. I bet somebody would volunteer to be tested on like that for the right amount of money, though.

>>564137356
Mengele wasn't interested in the limits of the mind, if that's what you mean, but his experiments did test the limits of the body in a lot of ways. What he did was immoral, yet it's hard to deny the dude was both insane and brilliant. I wouldn't be surprised if a few aspects of modern medicine studied his notes and applied it, if you ask me.

As for other experiments, the Nazis did do stuff with propaganda and psychology that was on a completely different level at the time (though it seems simplistic now), something that was taken over by the Soviets after the fall of the Reich. It seems pretty mundane, but stuff like subliminal messaging can be an extremely effective tool if used right, and brainwashing found its modern, practical roots in WW2.

Also something I'm researching as part of my studies on videogames: synesthesia in videogames, and the synergy between that and brainwashing / propaganda and the like.

>>564136642
Well, both The Purge movies are a bit similar in that respect. First one is okay'ish but has a great antagonist, second one is much better but doesn't have a good antagonist, but the concept behind it is dope. Not really horror though. As for more movies, I'm not fully sure, I'm looking for 'm myself. Definitely try Monster though, even if you're not a weeaboo (neither am I) it's still really cool. Also a live-action series made of it, if I remember correctly.

Then you have movies like this one, which was pretty fucking good too...

Horror isn't just about the gore... It's about the mystery, the confusion, and the shock. Why did movies like Psycho, Jaws, Silence of the Lambs, A Clockwork Orange, and pic related fair relatively well? Because gore wasn't the staple. The real horror lies in what you don't see, don't know, don't understand, can't control, or can't piece together.

No, I don't. Horror and Thrillers are really such a fine line to tread between, because they're very much similar. Those films mentioned, which may now be classified as thrillers were at one time considered horror movies.

People turning up heavily maimed and made unrecognizeable by a serial killer is fairly horrifying if you have the right mindset. Problem is nowadays people think what divides horror and thriller essentially is policework and whether or not the antagonist is paranormal and is somehow unstoppable beyond normal means.

It's all about perspective, really.

>>564140582
I don't even make the distinction anymore, to be honest, academically the distinction between genres has long been considered moot anyway. Horror and thriller are mostly used as buzzwords now to attract a certain crowd to a certain movie, it's more marketing than anything else. If a true definition of the genres must be given, horror relies on scaring the viewer by jump-scares, shocking imagery and escalating tension, while thrillers rely on complexity of the plot and 'dark themes' to create a constant state of tension without a form of catharsis in the form of shocks. That said, even thrillers can have supernatural elements, and horror can have mundane elements, it's mostly the execution that differs and the style of the narrative.

>>
>>564143014
Depends on what you call senseless, to be honest. Even Saw, frequently cited as the prime example of torture porn (negatively) has plenty of redeeming factors story-wise. The idea that a survivor of The Game would appreciate something so mundane as 'being alive' much more is a pretty good concept, for instance. The series focused too much on different, less interesting things going further though.

So, I dunno, guess it depends on your definition of senseless, I think that's the key. After all, what I wrote above about what I appreciate about Saw might be something that hasn't even come up for you, for instance, or it did and you value it lower than I do. 'To each his own' is definitely true in that regard. Plenty of movies to choose from at least.
