ender's quartet:
Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

Speaker for the dead is by far the best book. It has a different tone than Ender's Game. More grown up. My favorite in the series followed close by Ender's Game. I didn't find the last two to be nearly as good.

Snow Crash is Cyberpunk. It's Nanotech pseudo-sequel Diamond Age: Or a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer is also pretty dang good.

I would not call it god-tier but the pictured Obsidian and Blood trilogy was nifty as well. They are Aztec magical mysteries starring a priest of the god of death.

Question guys.....

What's with all of the hate on Ayn Rand?

I just finished reading Anthem, and while I wouldn't call it "God tier", I enjoyed it very much.

I feel like people hate her work for no real reason in particular, the same way /b/ hates the movie Drive.

>inb4shitstorm

It was a good movie.
>>

Isn't The Count of Monte Cristo like 1,000 pages long? Is it REALLY worth it? I've been debating on whether or not to read it...

The Dresden Files

I read a lot, i mean A LOT and The Dresden Files are by far my favorite series. As it has progressed throughout the series it has become so packed with action and the story lines of different characters are so well written that you can re-read the series at pick up on things that you either have missed or forgotten and its like you were reading the book for the first time again. I'd suggest you sincerely look into this series.

There are 15 books in the series so far with still more to come. He just released Skin Game back in May.

They made a tv show for one season out of this book. You can check it out, but it is pretty horrible compared to the books. I wouldn't judge the books based on the show. But if you've read some of the books and watch it, you'll enjoy it.

You would still need to explain how Africa developed past the rest of the world unless this book exists in a universe where Africa always had the lead in development, but that would require you to figure out the world without the middle easterners and greeks for example and making african versions of those.
Development does not happen by chance or because one set of people are way smarter than others, it is a long chain of cause and effect.

After trying to read the whole series, this is my opinion.
Ender's Game is legendary. One of my favorite books ever. I would recommend it to anybody.
Speaker for the Dead was good, although it was kind of a drag at certain points towards the end, and the mystery of the alien race proved more interesting than its explanation. "Thought-provoking" is the operative word.
Xenocide was awful. I couldn't get through 3 chapters before I dropped it. That being said, I didn't even try to read the last book in the quartet.

There's a sad documentary out there about illegal gold miner's in South Africa.

A few decades ago Dubai and Qatar didn't know how either, now they do. Learning how to mine isn't some unattainably-complex thing, if anything Africa has an advantage by already having an obscenely-lucrative mining industry that is marred by largely servicing the black market. Again, the issue is political more than anything else, break the chain of corrupt leadership to direct that wealth to legitimate sources and the resources are there to make Africa an economic powerhouse

If you happen to be a fan of historical fiction I really recommend Count Belisarius. Obviously I, Claudius is the more well-known book but I actually found this one more interesting just because of the time period being this odd crossroads that is past antiquity but isn't yet medieval.

Anything by Gary Jennings

If you havent read the classics of sci fi, like Heinlein, Niven, or Azimov, start there, it will keep you busy for a couple of years.

One of my all time favorite books is "Silverlock", by John Meyers Meyers, but you have to be a lit fag to understand why it's so good.

Mark Twain is always a good idea.

Anything by William Gibson
Anything by Bruce Sterling
Anything by Neal Stephenson

Early Stephen King, if you havent.
Huge fan of Peter Straub, Ghost Story and Shadowland are a must

Umberto Ecco is excellent, Foucault's Pendulum is amazing, really enjoyed Name of the Rose (the movie sucked, the book is really good)
Mark Helprin is very good, Winter's Tale is amazing, again, the movie sucked ass. Soldier of the Great War is excellent.

Hunter S. Thompson is a must, all of his books. Start with Hells Angels and follow that with The Great Shark Hunt, then dive into the rest.

Story was thoroughly interesting, but I think it's the writing that makes it so good.

The book's much different than the movie. And I do like it more.

It never felt like a cautionary tale to me since the society is absurdly specific to make way for one epic heros journey.

They are really different types of reading. Hobbit is a light novel and LotR is more like a history compendium. Enjoyed both thou, in different ways.

Good and steampunk do not go together.

I just find Jo Nesbø so goddamn boring, it's like if the only thing I knew about your culture is the most mainstream and ultimately boring thing about it.

There is. It's also excellent.

Reynolds is one of the best.

My picture is a very good one. And it's getting better in the second book. I'll buy the third soon.

I'm starting to read more often. Half way through this series. Any recommendations after this? I really liked the sense of espionage. Something a little more widely respected would be nice.

Wait a minute, that's not the book I meant to post. Does any one know what I'm talking about. I'm sure it's called "The Healer".

It's about a guy in the future who gets infected with a non sentient symbiotic alien which attaches itself to this guys brain and it becomes intelligent. It can change the structure of the hosts body. Grows a second heart and shit. Eventually they realise it can change the structure of other beings it touches and goes on to cure a galaxy wide plague?

I've been looking for this book for fucking years.

The collapsing society of the real world, driven by corporate greed and a failing earth is the cautionary tail
That it was seamlessly woven in with the main story just means the author knew what he was doing.

I'm just funkin with you. I'm not a nesbo fan. But I do like Jennings mankell

I liked The Long Earth, and didn't realize there were sequels to it. I'll have to check those out.

daemon and freedom are both very good.

I'm reading the Expanse series right now, on Cibola Burn and in love with series

At first I was like "GTFO, video game, lol", but there actually is one even though with how the book is, the video game would either be really shit or the story would be changed so much that there would be the set pieces left.

Haven't a seen anyone mention this. It's my favourite book by Gaiman (although Neverwhere was really good) and one of my favourite novels overall.
The Night Angel Trilogy is also good as a fantasy series.
And The Dark Tower. It gets weaker in the last few books when King introduces himself as a character, but his writing is just too good to stop reading.

Here is all scandi crime novels in a nutshell: alcoholic\dark personality middle aged man fucks a lot more than he would irl (in the case of Stieg larssons books, Hugh Hefner levels of getting laid), is generally the smartest asshole in the room and just wins all the time, but is still depressed as fuck. They are like male versions of twillight.

If you like his type of horror (and by horror, I mean the exact opposite of modern slasher horror) Then he is great.
er. most of his stuff is great.
The Cthulhu mythiose stories are great, and so are some of his other stories, but some of them are just really bland
>>
>>558754478
True, but in all (good) cyberpunk the society is a dystopia.

Funny I was about to buy this book a few weeks ago. I was deciding either that or "1945 What If Japan hadn't surrendered in WW2". Still not regrets but next time I hit the book store that's on my list.

I would say this one right here is God tier material. First book I picked up for my own pleasure and has been my favorite ever since

Had a few friends brow beat me into reading this. It's supposed to be a scifi masterpiece but it left me blah. Felt like prince and princess meet some smart/stupid aliens.
