It was awesome. I was mechanic in the air force, I did daily/preflight maintenance for F-18 and got special training for weapon and counter-measures that was given for something like 1/3 of us.

Conscripted and sent to some jaeger-brigade, before my time to leave came I learned about air force mechanic school. I had airplane mechanic papers in civilian, so decided to apply to there, 1 day of tests and got accepted. 1700 applicants, 100 accepted so it didnt go that bad.

12 month "tour", as we had to be made NCOs. First 6 months served in air force technical school, 2 months of basic training and 4 months of NCO/mechanic schooling. For some reason we had to be made corporal, so we had shitloads of things to learn. In addition to everything related to planes and weapons systems we had to know how to lead rifle teams like any other corporal. We also had to learn basic skills of MPs, engineers, medics, jaegers and radio operators, and im pretty sure there was something im forgetting, as if the shit hits the fan we have to be able to do everything and anything around our base without support from outside companies: patrolling, explosives removal, NCB-removal, base defence, shit like that.

After training it was 6 months in Lapland in fighter wing, doing daily flight operations. Very nice, the pilots were awesome guys and the officers in the wing were not too tight about anything as long as we did what we were there to do as it was supposed to be done. Daily routine included doing daily checks for the planes, preflight checks, drinking lots of coffee, talking shit and playing lemmings.

I also got to be "squad leader" when new guys went to their first combat training camp. It was february, we slept in tents ofc, warmest day was -24c and coldest night was -42,6c. And all I had to do was watch new guys fill their clips, throw some training granades to simulate incoming artillery fire, and trying to keep myself and new guys warm enough not to lose any toes.
