Objectivity and tolerance aside, OP, I think your taste is pretty awful if you actually think that is good art.

Actually, I got good grades until I dropped out because I was sick of waistcoats and berets and pretending that anyone can be an artist if they really like the idea that they are one.

Good art takes time, skill and a clear concept. It conveys a message unambiguously, because it is clear and concise visual language.

It doesn't have to be representational, but I agree with Tolstoy that an artwork is only truly "good art" when there is a tangible delivery of emotion from the artist to the audience. Pic related, for example.

Bad art is jumbled and messy, unskilled, clearly hurried, and is the visual equivalent of word salad. In the particular case of OP's pic, it is literally word salad.

The only emotion I ever pick up from Basquiat is a kind of schizoid, frightened bewilderment.
>>
>>550483674
>why dont you like the same stuff i like?!!?
>>
>>550484612
It's an opinion. I really doubt that you telling someone that what they see as art is actually "word salad" will change that opinion.
>>
Art is something that by being exposed to it helps me focus or reshape my thoughts, endulge or accept another ones, that gives me a new perspective, makes me realize something, helps me get an idea of times past, clears my head or occupies it. Art to me can be anything, and quite often, art that does not meet my usual standarts of beauty or concept makes me realize more that something I think is beautiful or interesting right away. Art is food for soul and brain at the same time, for eyes or ears. Art can make you realize what you were about, what you are about, the concept of life or people, ages long before you.
But most importantly, art is binary, there is the piece of art itself, and it is basically meaningless to you, what it is and means is inheretly different from what it does to you.
The latter is the impact and relevance of art to me.
So yeah, that must sound crazy pretentious, but I really believe this profoundly.

My tumblr if you feel inclined to view what I think is art. http://kasopay.tumblr.com/

For the sake of argument, I'll respond.
Firstly, this is /b/. People come here for entertainment purposes. There are better places to discuss art, music, literature, you name it.
Secondly, I haven't read one (yeah, not ONE) relevant opinion in this thread. This is all about "I like this" "I like that better" complemented with images pulled out of the arse of the internet. Additionally, many people seem to have difficulties to distinguish art from graphic design, illustration and other forms of postmodern bullshit.
Thirdly, art, like music or literature, is completely irrelvant these days. Nobody cares for quality or content. Categories that used to be applied to art have no meaning in the 21st century. In other words: art is meaningless and so is this thread.

I guess you got a point there. Gaming is 100% escapism, which does not mean no art whatsoever exists in video games, but thats a debate I would hate to start.
However, if you take a crash dive in the creative community of a major city you will realize the percentage of beta faggots is rather low.
On the internet, eh, different story, hard to say.

I think he refers to the Ikea mass produced paintings, which suck out the life of art as an individual expression of emotion, sold as decorative pieces, in large quantities. It appeals to the average joe based on aesthetics, without any deeper thought into the meaning of said mass produced paintings, which gives the whole scene a very postmodern feel, and as such the scene in Ikea with the paintings and people buying them is art in it´s own way. Good job Ikea.

Thats what post modernism is, the vanishing of categories. I guess thinking about the culture industry and how it warped the meaning and function of art can be depressing, but it makes sense to adapt art to our changing needs.
Old masterpieces and categories or concepts of art will always exists as judge and foundation of what future art may produce.

That really depends on which anime you are talking about. It´s like with music, Justin Bieber is not art, he´s a product. Likewise anime like Naruto is not art, it´s a shitty cartoon.

However I would argue that an anime like Serial Experiments Lain, is a work of art, it meets the qualifications, It has meaning and substance, is visually appealing, very well executed and will have you thinking in a mind boggled state for a long time afterwards.

>>
>>550487791
Art, just like music and literature, pretended to enrich our existence by giving us moral, emotional and cognitive support. They provided values and orientation. Come the 20th century mankind realised that this entire concept is a scam. We're bags full of blood and shit and it all doesn't matter. Actually buying into the illusion of art (music, literature) having any metaphysical value has been going on for centuries, pretty much like the cultural predominance of religions, but that doesn't work anymoe.
Don't get me wrong, I earn my living as an author, but that is precisely the reason why I became such a cultural nihilist. You are creative, sell you shit and move on to the next thing. It's demand and supply. Everything else is make believe.

I'm not preaching, to each their own. But threads like these are waste of bandwidth, that's all I'm saying.

Mmm i can see that point as valid, but i disagree with it. To me art has two pinnacle functions, which are aesthetics, and emotion/meaning. A work that is pretty, but devoid of feeling is still pretty, it's pleasing and so fills the role of aesthetics and bringing forth feelings in the viewer. Something that conveys feelings but is not pleasing to the eye is also art. Something that does both is a masterpiece.

>>550488137
See the funny thing is i "get" modern art. Te pioneers of it, like that guy who painted that painting that was hung sideways forever, thats just lines and colours, he was trying to reduce the aesthetic of art to it's core. That certain figures and colours juxtaposed in certain way could illicit a response, and that is beautiful. But what passes as art now days? Fuck on my last visit to an art gallery i saw a shoe on a pedestal. It wasn't painted or anything, it was just a shoe that anyone could have bought and placed somewhere, and people would have called it retarded, but because some "artists" did it, and it was in a gallery people were crowded around it trying to pretend they were so cultured for liking it.
>>
>>550488651

I consider that a compliment, I guess.

It's not that I'm elitist, it's just that I don't like to see a community of people lying to each other about how skilled they are, when there are thousands upon thousands of people with real, obvious and tangible talent who never get exhibited because they don't play the part of a "professional studio artiste" and make little ragdolls out of used tampons and bin liners or whatever.

>>550488937

Yeah, I have no problem with the idea of non-representational art, and interpretive dance routines and interactive sculptures and all that jazz, so long as it is any combination of (a) aesthetically pleasing, (b) emotionally evocative, or (c) transmitting a clear message.

For example, I can appreciate Dadaism for the comment it was making, but Warhol and the Pop Art shite just strikes me as unnecessarily irreverent. As in, Dada was about challenging the VERY present and well-established elitism in art at the time, but when Warhol came along, there was no culture of elitism left to challenge, so his message was lost/retarded.

We'd already had decades of art that was deliberately unlike anything that had ever been considered beautiful before, what the hell was he trying to say with Brillo Boxes?

So, in a way, it's a shame that Dadaism and subsequent modern movements were so successful in destroying elitist culture in the art world, because the pendulum has swung the other way completely since then, and it's going to be really hard to try and kick off a trend of challenging the art world by actually being talented and taking time over a work.

Haha, i like you anon. Glad to know theres someone else out there, who appreciates art, and sees Warhol for the hack he was.

The problem with his and many following movements is that they actually created a new artistic elite. That of the "bohemian" and.. well i cant think of any better term, or anything it better applies to thhan this, "hipster" art elite. Where unless you are doing something ironic or "different", then you just must not understad because you are too pleb.
