tl;dr unrelated windows xp vs. windows 7 thoughts --

you could probably get 8.0 or any version to work on windows xp.
xp mode on windows 7 does not work. it will not be able to connect to the internet.

so in conclusion windows xp is better than windows 7.
'cept i have to use it because niggers keep making shit windows 7 only and won't support windows xp.
so you could basically say that you could use an old version as long as you can until being forced to "upgrade" to a new version of windows.

but i'm already doing that with a lot of different things that are not aol.
utorrent 2.x, chromium build 2300, firefox version 28.
without having any clear replacemnt for the "old" versions of utorrent, chromium, or firefox.
will i be forced to stop using those 1 day with a new version of windows that makes everything incompatible?
winodws 8 doesn't have an xp mode or support and it doesn't look like windows 10 will have it either.
if it had the software and programs support i need i'd probably say "fuck this, i'm going to gnu+linux".
"developers, developers, developers, developers" i guess.

i even went as far as trying "windows virtual pc" and "windows xp mode" to see if i could get it to work on there.
windows xp mode is bigger than a mother fucker with a 482 MB download, and a 2440 MB hard drive alone.
windows xp mode also has connection troubles similar to aol on windows 7 so it's pointless.
windows xp mode is kind of pointless because your hardware isn't really working for it.
so, windows xp mode != windows xp.

also the big surprise is my comp has an intel core i7 and an ssd but kept freezing and crashing. absolutely unbelievable.
apparently it had nothing to do with it being "bloatware" or doing too much shit for the computers of the 1990's and early 2000's to handle.
it always freezes and crashes no matter what you use.
would probably freeze and crash if you used the top 10 super computers of the world.
because it's still taking up like 00 cpu and still freezing and crashing all the time.

so i'd probably recommended version 9.0 optimized and downards to 6.0 or 4.0 if you can get it to work if you have windows xp.
i unfortunately can't really recommend any version because 9.0 vr doesn't only look worse but is nasty but all the others are broken if you have windows 7.
i think if they kept their icon, identity, and "classic" look -- maybe if they had themes and an old 4.0 "look" while being updated -- it would be possible to use.
having tested it on the windows xp virtual machine the lowest version i could get to work on there was 7.0.
that is unfortunate since 7.0 doesn't have the same icon or perhaps even overall look as 4.0 to 6.0.
6.0 and 5.0 www just refuses to start and breaks down. also 4.0 gives an error message.

honestly just looking at the green aol icon of versions 1.0 to 3.0 i realized that i was far more nostalgic and struck by that.
i guess it's good to keep old versions of computers in case you want to keep old programs.
and programs is the main reason we get these computers when you think about it right.

p.s. i was saving a record of this before in notepad++ but it crashed and the file was saved to 0 KB or deleted with no way to recover the information.

notepad++ never crashed on me before so it can only be aol 9.0 vr shit that automatically opens any time you open anything aol related after you install it.
why is it interfering and detecting programs that have nothing to do with it? that it has no business interfering with? just to fuck everything up! for no reason!
what's hilarious and sad is that i saw them "offer" something like "free virus scan. find out why your computer's running so slow!" and i'm like "yeah. aol.".
it's seriously like malware. like corporations took it over and tried to make money and shove shit in it so much it fucked everything up.
i mean the stereotype was that stupid users use it but that's apparently really actually true. but that's not the fucked up part.
the fucked up part is they prey on users who don't know anything about a computer and tell them it's "easy" when it's really fucking difficult.

so, aol was relatively good at 1 point, but as time went on it got progressively worse.
maybe "aim" did kill it by having the number 1 feature of communication for free in 1997.
maybe the "aol time warner" merger did kill it. and forced more advertisements and shit onto it.
but more likely aol leaving the aol time warner merger and only the executives trying to make money off of it remaining probably fucked it up.
and again it's sad because 9.0 vr was designed to work with vista and above but they made it nasty malware. that's sad.
maybe the versions before that were relatively better. but it's for windows xp. and i guess more so windows 3.x plus windows 9x and the age of phones.
so if you're morbidly curious as myself to actually try it then i reluctantly recommend tryharding to get aol 9.0 optimized and lower to work. that might be shit too tho.

to be naively optimistic on the bright side i save records in sections of 4 MB per file, this was relatively recent, and i had 1 backup from 1 month ago.
but it's still 24 days of data lost. all that data i had since transferring to this computer. that's sad. no seriously you guys fuck aol.
also you guys should consider doing weekly backups instead of monthly backups.

i tried to download blast zorak but it didn't work

from what i see basically aol is a program you run that has a lot of shit that would take a long time to download pre-installed. so you have broadband-like looks with dial-up internet already there and directly read from your computer. the thing is most of the time, for the real files you have to choose to play, it takes you to web page or link that no longer exists

it really makes me think a lot about the internet... how a lot of it isn't archived and a lot of it is unavailable... is it right? it's basically saying "instead of playing this game you can download it from us once then never play it again". that's the price you pay for relative or primitive drm... maybe they should keep shit up on the internet indefinitely. maintain it instead of tarring shit down... the image boards and sites like here kind of do that in looks but do change their directories as well.

it's interesting how everyone always says "update it" or "update to the latest version" as a solution while abandoning everything that came with the previous version.

again, it's kind of why it's kind of nice to not have that and have stuff instead of services.

so if you try to download a game or something you can't do something else in the meantime

everything is locked until that works or fails

and it takes like what is... apparently literally 60 seconds before it gives up and realizes it can't do it.

never winter nights ended in 1997 apparently. the same year aim came out. that means that by the time windows 98 and aol 4.0 (the version that can use broadband and the version you're mostly seeing in these screenshots) came out after never winter nights was dead.

1991 to 1997 was truly its own age. windows 98 wasn't just an improvement. because there's another factor that everyone ignores and pretends doesn't exist -- time. despite making it obvious by killing so many things that you can then never get again thus it's encapsulated in that memory and tied to that time.
