So true:

GIFs are from the 80s. Animated GIFs are from the early 90s. Technology has changed a little since then. Computers are spectacularly more powerful. Connections are insanely better. These screens of ours aren’t exactly limited to VGA resolution.

In addition, we've had more than 20 years to figure out better ways of doing compression, and maintaining a better balance between compression and quality. Not that /b/ will do a good job of handling that balance, but when used right the WEBM result will always be superior to the GIF.

In that time VHS died and DVD replaced it. Then DVD died and Blu-ray replaced it. Think about that, the animated GIF came about in the day and age of VHS tape. Minor revisions since, but bandaids at best.

It's time to let go of the animated GIF gramps.

If you know how to strip an audio track from a video to comply with moot’s no audio requirement, all you need after that is Miro Converter to create a WEBM. It's drag, drop, select WEBM and click. Not rocket science. If you're more technically literate, WEBM gives you access to modern video editing software to create your content with the confidence that it’ll translate well. GIF didn’t always.

But what really does it for me is that you fuckers have been using the same damn, stupid, typically low res GIFs for the last 20 years. Yes, the first batch of WEBMs on /b/ are going to be stupid ass partials of YouTube videos and movies, but some OC is going to come alongside that. That alone wins it for me.

Seriously, dump the GIF. (And your CD player while you’re at it!)
