i tried using aol on windows 7 to see what would happen or to see if it's as bad as everyone says. i wanted to give aol a chance. here are the results.

>aol 9.0 optimized is broken. update loop. freezes every time. would be easy to close if it didn't freeze and crash. basically unusable. can't test www. decent icon.

you could probably get 8.0 or any version to work on windows xp.
xp mode on windows 7 does not work. it will not be able to connect to the internet.
so in conclusion windows xp is better than windows 7.

so you could basically say that you could use an old version as long as you can until being forced to "upgrade" to a new version of windows.
but i'm already doing that with a lot of different things that are not aol.

winodws 8 doesn't have an xp mode or support and it doesn't look like windows 10 will have it either.
if it had the software and programs support i need i'd probably say "fuck this, i'm going to gnu+linux".

i even went as far as trying "windows virtual pc" and "windows xp mode" to see if i could get it to work on there.
windows xp mode is bigger than a mother fucker with a 482 MB download, and a 2440 MB hard drive alone.
windows xp mode also has connection troubles similar to aol on windows 7 so it's pointless.
windows xp mode is kind of pointless because your hardware isn't really working for it.
so, windows xp mode != windows xp.
