Yes, smashing state and corporate provides an economic and physical disincentive for the police to commit brutality against other citizens.
At best, this one form of political action will lead to police reform within the state system, people are networking for future productive projects, information is being spread from multiple sources, the spirit of revolution is strengthened by highlighting the obvious oppression from the police and the capitalist system vs. the people in such large numbers, etc.
However, they shouldn't stop there, we need to develop their class consciousness, which requires education, debate, etc. Another way to put the problem is, what they are doing is good, but they don't know the economic and social relations that cause them to do that to begin with, which limits their range of solutions.
I suggest, after a class consciousness is developed, or for those who already have one in the area, to take advantage of the numbers of people that are there and to, at the very least, occupy abandoned warehouses and such, bank-owned houses, and convert them into production spaces. That would be under the radar and could last a significant amount of time if they stay low-key in this chaotic climate.
They could loot strategic stores such as gun shops, places where there's military equipment, and then store them somewhere. Hold an occupy-style lectures to build that class consciousness, network for future projects like voting for representatives and create counter-economic projects.
That's all I can think of right now, but those are solutions that are informed by radical ideology and reactionary anger. It disempowers people to say "smashing police cars is good enough, just stop there, don't be too radical".
