I have trouble with taking shots. I guess I don't know what to do when tying up and how to set up a shot. I do fairly well I guess but could do better.

Can I ask you a few things? What problems are you facing? is your opponent sprawling on you and you're stuck on bottom/ref position. Are you grabbing the leg and unable to finish? Do you finish but you lose the scramble?
I'm a judoka and even when i coach and play with wrestling's rule set I love to tie up. Because of that i prefer using the ankle pick/ judo's kibisu gaeshi. And chain into a swing single or use the single to chain attack.
When I teach beginners 2 major concepts that highschool kids struggle with is level changing and keeping their head elevated. A lot of times you see kids just do a japanese bowing motion and try to lunge for a leg.
I am going to use several videos as a resource to help illustrate my explanations.
The main one will be from this youtube

One huge concept people need to understand a shot IS NOT a direct forward attack, its an angled attack coming from the side. I want you to refer to the 1:30 mark to 1:52 mark.
multi time state winning coach Erick Phillips, refers to this as "fitting"right, good level grappling, this is an important learning tool, so ideally you want to be at the side of your opponent.
Now that you have that goal in mind, lets think how do we get to that point, For this i am going to use the following as a reference

Using the neck tie up. you're going to control uke/opponent's elbow, this is the part where you need you coaches and training partners to give you live feed back, but you need to develop your footwork and timing to pop the elbow up, level change, and then either propel for your shot or bait uke into stepping for the pick.

Well this is my first year and I'm just starting to learn everything. I am pretty strong and can get by with a lot of things because of it, but I'm not excelling to the point I know I can. I pretty much need help with most things. My coach is alright, but he's not going to get me where I want to get.

First year? Learn your layers of defense, learn ONE SHOT
ONE TILT (ref top)
ONE STAND UP(ref bottom)
I tell freshmen this all the time and I am transparent. Wrestling is a great art and sport, but you're going to confuse the living shit and not progress trying to learn, every shot set up and every tilt variant.
Learn one shot or move and run with it, lots of top guys are specialist and you can win and succeed focusing on one move.
What rule set are you competing with?

Folk wrestling. I should've joined earlier so I would've been better by this time, but can't change that now. I know most of the basics and stuff, just looking for extra tips and stuff. I wrestle 170 lb weight class btw.

Here's an excellent resource on ankle picks.

It helps knowing the basics of how to, but might help chain your shots

How can I do a moonsault
is it worthwhile to perfect my fireman's? I really like the shot but I find it hard to set up and execute smoothly in a real match
I train in BJJ + Nogi. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the low single in a submission wrestling context.
I want a good shot, but I've had neck issues, so the only one I feel comfortable doing live is the low single and I've has some success with it and want to make it better.
I first worked the catch wrestling variation which I still default too (finishing by bumping the shoulder into the ankle). Here is one video, but I usually don't find that set up when I do it:

Anyways, aside from Erik (he's got other stuff for it too) and a little brief bit by Billy Robinson there isn't a lot out on this low single.
So, I know that in wrestling, it is done differently. I have watched John Smith's videos, and really like his game. To an extent anyways, some of it I can immediately tell doesn't translate to submission rules.
I have been working some of the John smith drills, but seem to default to trying the shoulder finish when I go live. Although, if I do end up under them, I at least have some stuff I can work from that position now.
I also, have no information on how the gi changes the game.
So, does anyone have any insight into the low single in gi and nogi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
I already know about diving into a heel hook from the catch variation and going to a leg weave knee bar from the standard John Smith finish.
