Any good books on judo?

I found a nice place almost literally next door to me, but they don't train a lot - just spar.

So basically I am on my own (0 judo experience) against green-blue-black belts and some other white belts who are apparently good but never bothered graduating.

So I need a book or something that will explain basic breakfalls and techniques to me, currently picked up Feldenkrais "Judo the Art of Defense and Attack" (1951) and Nakabayashi "Judo" (1966) but don't feel it's optimal since the books are so old.

General judo newbie advice is welcome too.

What kind of judo gym doesn't teach you how to break fall? Sounds like shit and a sure fire way to get a lawsuit

I don't really care if it's shit because they don't teach me. It's very close to me, the people are friendly, it has a small weight room, etc. I want to train there even if it's not the best decision but I do need literature to actually learn judo and practice it in the gym.

Well I mean you just go, pick a partner and roll. Sparring partners give me tips and instructions but I'd rather know what to do beforehand.

Thats kind of wierd. everywhere Ive done judo they away did conditioning and drills prior to sparring. In fact we did more drills than randori

There are drills too. Just don't know how they are called. First there's a warmup, usually team games like soccer where you are allowed to do judo techniques. Then drills, where we just throw each other gently or get in a position for a throw with the other guy not resisting. The throws can be whatever. Then we spar for an hour or so.

My dojo is kinda similar but we do more drills.
it really helped me to stick around and ask for help at the end, like entries to throws, breaking fall etc
Maybe consider doing the same?

So. Warmups, followed by uchikomi, followed by naga-waza, followed by randori.

Sounds like every other Judo club I've ever seen.

How long have you been training there? Have you tried just asking one of the senior guys to explain some of the basics to you? There HAS to be some old black belt who loves to talk the ear off new guys...

In the meantime, any Judo books or websites you can read/watch will help you out.
Here's some

Also, if you can find a copy of Mike Swain Complete Judo online, you'll get a lot of good information.

Stick with it and good luck, dude.
