The only people I would call Professor or Ajarn would be my coach's coach, but they are pretty legendary (even more than him) and I don't know them very well.

Also, you may have to do 100 pushups if you don't say Ajarn in front of Ajarn Chai.

In Portuguese (and other romance languages), professor does not carry the contain of higher academia and simply means teacher. Even grade school teachers in Italy are called professors.
