what stick are you guys riding this year?
I found my '08 Forum Youngblood and '08 Ride LX bindings in my storage, going to take them for a whirl first time up!
>>
Does skateboard experience transfer over to snowboarding?
>>
>>738030
Relatively- it helps with the comfort of riding sideways and balance. Learning the length of your board, how to use your edges, and having your feet locked into a binding will be the more "difficult" transition.
Most people I have taken boarding for their first time have been skateboarders/longboarders and they are definitely less of a hassle to teach
>>
>>738030
It's similar in some senses. If you're a power sliding type of skateboarder, you will have no problem. A common problem with beginner snowboarders is that they tend to lean back a lot. You know that in skateboarding, leaning back equals wiping out or dragging your tail on the ground. In snowboarding, your feet will be locked in place and there will be more focus on your edges. Slowing down or stopping is very similar to powerslides, except it requires less effort. Twisting the board is similar to turning trucks. Remember that you can move each foot independently to create different turn results. Also, squeezing and widening your legs will put pressure on different parts of the edges of the board. Your nose and tail will be longer and will feel heavier opposed to skateboarding. The more you fall, the faster you learn.

Powder snowboarding is more similar to surfing/wakeboarding.

Aussie heading for Whistler post (phone won't let me reply)

It's the best 2 mountains and town ever, you'll probably end up moving there.
I road tripped there from Vancouver for a weekend.. Ended up staying 2 years
>>
Here's my progression in snowboarding
8 days each year
1st year snowboarding: I learn how to snowboard really poorly, partially blame the instructors but also myself
2nd year: I have to spend the whole year fixing my shitty riding
3rd year: trying to do tricks and failing
also the friends I rode with only wanted to do the same paths every time and didn't care to progress

Now I'm coming up on my fourth, and I'm worse than many people after their first year. It's a bad feel fam.
>>
>>743255
To add I don't even know switch

I suppose I should spend the first sessions on that, any other suggestions?
>>
>>737299
Snowboarders are cancer on mountains, never looking where you are going, scraping off all the powder
>>
>>743255
>>743257
I'd recommend taking few advanced lessons. Instructor will be able to tell you what you're doing wrong instantly and he'll be able to also tell how you're supposed to do it. The more you keep riding with incorrect technique the harder it will be for you to unlearn and eventually fix it.

The rule in everything you're trying to learn is that you gotta learn the basics first. Stop all the tricks and off piste shit for a while and focus entirely on learning how to control the board. Once you've got a good control on piste you can start even thinking about doing tricks or going off piste.

Also there is nothing wrong with riding the same paths a lot. If you're on a small hill that's all you can do.
>>
>>743315
skier here. only shitty snowboarders do that so if thats a problem you should stop looking for powder on greens like a filthy casual or learn to carve like a man

What are ski dads?
>>
>>744140
Has little kids.Is rich and from big city. They irresponsibly let their little kids loose around the mountain zigzagging around in the trees and cutting everyone off. They take videos of their kids skiing a "hard" trail and post it on youtube, making sure to make the kids' age apparent. A typical video will be in a glade, and the dad will stop and film each of their five kids ski past.

TL;DR - They are obnoxious and inconsiderate to any others on the mountain, thinking they and their kids are the best skiers on the mountain.

This, so fucking much...

Not only do "ski dads" irresponsibly allow their children to roam the slopes to cut you off, but if they do, and you manage to slightly graze your fingernail on their child's $1000 snowjacket, you can say they're off to start a fight for something you're not responsible for...

Bunch of nut-bags, in reality.

Quickly saw a review. Judging by the hybrid camber, Imma' guess you're looking for a board that can do a little bit of everything.

I suggest the 2015 Union Force Bindings. Not overrated at all. Its medium flex (being 5) allows stable landings from huge kickers/ramps, and jumping off rails.

You might've heard of the their lifetime warranty on baseplates? Yeah. That's neat.

Also, as a pro. tip - Check out a YouTube channel called The House. They tend to give out snowboard and snowboarding gear reviews almost every day! Spares a lot of time, when having to look for new gear.

>racer fags who feel the need to bomb every run and zoom past you like your trying to race them

The list goes on. I especially hate any little ski kid who throws snowballs and shit
>>
>>747426
Racerfag here. We aren't actually bombing. Bombing implies straightlining or being uncomfortable at the speed. it's legitimately the speed Im most comfortable at, and I try to maintain it to better know how my skis respond at those speeds.
>>
>>747426
While racerfags might be skiing fast they're still well within the limits of their skills and skis. Just because they're going faster than you or your board can handle comfortably doesn't mean that they can't handle the speed. And race skis need certain amount of speed before they start working properly. Before that they're just a pair of liveless sticks. Once you get them up to speed they come alive to serve your every command.

Worst offenders are the ones who straightline down a slope. Yeah I might be going just as fast or even faster than the kid straightlining but I know exactly where I'm going and if need be I can change direction or stop myself almost instantly. The guy straightlining on shitty skis on the other hand is well beyond their skills and if something was to happen they couldn't do anything about it.

Btw if a leashed kid on a trail is a problem for you you're either skiing on a ridiculously narrow trails or in a dire need of skiing/boarding lessons.

which is better for a beginner, snowboard or skiing?

>going on a trip in a month
>city is close to a popular mountain for skiing and snowboarding
is going on the first day of their season a bad idea?
>>
>>747605
Skiing is probably a bit easier to pick up. Both about as hard to master. I'd say skiing offers a bit more variety.

Going on the first day of the season means that they most likely only have a few lifts and slopes open. And there won't be any real off piste skiing because not enough snow for that. Though if you're beginner you shouldn't be off piste anyway so it doesn't matter. If you're fine with a limited amount of slopes and skiing only groomers then there won't be any problems about going on the first day of season.
>>
>>747487
This guy's right about everything. I have no hate for leash parents, makes the children more predictable. Also, trying to straight line on race skis is sketchy as fuck
>>
You guys remember the game SSX?
SSX racing could be a real sport. Take standard snowboard racing and add:

1.Tricks done reduce your race time (best race time wins)
2.You are allowed to go off track/jump over corners
3.You are allowed to push other riders (no no touching the head / open palm pushes only / no grabbing)
>>
>>747619
So basically contact snowcross with tricks
>>
>>747623
and going off course
yeah
>>
>>747615
Trying to straight line on anything that isn't a DH ski is sketchy as fuck. And if you have DH skis on an open slope you're doing it wrong. Skis want to be on edge and become much more stable and predictable as soon as you have them on an edge.

As for the leash kids it's the best way to teach someone to ski. As long as you do it the right way and give them enough slack when they're doing fine. It allows for the kid or even an adult to ski on their own but still have a safety net that will catch them if they lose control.

I don't care what you do on the mountain as long as you follow the general rules. I've never had a problem with a boarder. Tbh kids on skis who think they know how to ski but actually have no idea on what they're doing are much more annoying most of the time. Skiing and snowboarding are just as expensive. In both the high end gear is expensive but you can get used/lower end gear cheaply. Besides unless you live on the resort travel, accommodation, tickets and food are a major part of the cost.

Hey, anon. OP here. Trouble with bombing a hill full of pow?

keep in mind, it's best to use a board with rocker camber.

The negative arc keeps you afloat, as the snow hits the base of your board.

If problems persist, consider waxing your board with high-flouride wax. Will help build up speed.

Thanks for the advice guys, my board is pretty cheap and fairly shitty tbh, so that could be a factor.
Planned on getting a new board this season anyways so gonna remember to look for a negative arch. My current looks like it has no arch at all.

OP here, again...

Lie your board on stable ground. Press down on the center of the board.

If the board springs up, that's called a negative camber, aka Rocker camber.

If the the board doesn't spring up at all, that means you have a flat camber.

These boards are mainly used at high speeds for stable turns, when shredding between the trees.

OP here.

Stance angle for the bindings? 9° and 9° for me, especially with such a short board... I'm 6' and them degrees help me for stable landings

Also, the original SSX games pwn, the 2012 one sucks.

Bumping for love!
About 20-30 cms forecasted on my slope over the next few days!
They're only open weekends and only have about 200 guests on a busy day, but LOTS of terrain and an elevation only matched by WhistlerBlackcomb

I've been picking up snowboarding over the past few years and I'm in the market to buy my own gear this winter. I saw that there is a ski/snowboarding swap happening near me tomorrow, and was thinking of stopping by. I need boots/bindings/board and a helmet.

The helmet should obviously come new, but does anyone have advice for what to look for in buying some of the other equipment? I'm sure people there would be able to help with things like fit, but what I am looking more for is:

- prices to look for, and what i should expect for either swap/gently used prices
- if there are any pieces other than the helmet that I should look for new
- major red flags to look for in used gear
- gear suggestions for someone who has only been out a few times but has conquered some greens and blues (5'9, 155lbs)

Thanks!

Go for new boots also, so breaking them in contours to your feet, also no peoples gross stinky feetses.

Glad to see this thread alive now! Didn't lurk and thought we were dead

Got myself some flow bindings, not sure what model but they're almost untouched and free!
Gona to ride them at 12/12, centered completely on the twin tip first time around

I know this already but thanks for the input.
Do you think the burton process fv would be a good choice if i want to try powder but also want to go to the park and also carve a bit?
Also need to work on my switch riding, so i feel like a twin is the best choice.
>>
>>753642
I'd go for the Burton FV. by any means, but I'm just a lye concerned about that 12.50 mm setback stance.

A month to go.

Can anyone recommend a very stiff board?
Price range is up to 500$
>>
>>746915

>been twice

brah why dont you just focus on your backside carves amirite
can you even backside stop yet?
>>
>>756079
I picked up heel stopping and heel turning on greens by the end of the second day, my falls were mainly because I couldn't turn right and it put me in some weird lines where I would either lose my balance or fly off the mountain.
>>
>>756088

heel is the easier of the two. if you catch an edge trying to backside, you might fall and whiplash the back of your head. I would focus on backside carving and stopping before trying any jumps. You need to be able to carve both ways in order to line yourself up properly

I was riding race/alpine boards for 10 years now and finally want to change to a soft board but will keep the hard gear, anyone else here experienced with race boards? Carving with them has a real good feeling to it but once the terrain gets bumpier you're fucked with a 185cm board. I also did competitions every season and even used a race board at Boardercross events, got 2nd place at the national championship a few years ago.
pic is from the first season I started competitions

Going to be living in vail for my second winter, I only snowboarded a few times when I rented a board, but im going to get a personal one soon.
My roommates hiked up and boarded down, said they were knee deep in powder. I hope it's a good season
>>
>>741603
Snowboarding is just like very high speed longboarding (provided you keep your feet in a parallel or "v" shape. Not the normal perpendicular stance many people do). It's really easy to transfer if you are comfortable sliding on a longboard. Go buy some butter balls or free dumbs and practice sliding on dry land. When you get to snowboarding, it's the same thing as longboarding at 30~40 mph with slide wheels.
>>
I've been riding for about 4 years and I'm pretty good at mountain riding - carving, switch, etc, but now I want to get into park a little more but I'm scared. What should I do?
>>
>>756434
Is that at grand targhee in Idaho?
>>
>>758879
Practice ground work first. Like pop 180's. buttercups. Manuals (tail press on snow). Then transpose them to boxes. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD START WITH WIDE BOXES. If you wanna try jumps, hit stright air, then just wing your spins. Don't think, just do
>>
>>755300
What do you need a stiff board for? I'm 10 years in and I can't tell you how ineffective a stiff board is for everything BUT powder and boarderX
>>
>>759111
My current board can't keep my weight when im doing sharp turns, it kinda starts slipping away, causing me to either land on my arse or face.
And yes my prefered terrain is freeriding/piste.

anybody here ride at copper mountain, CO? I'm going there this thanksgiving before the season in the east starts and I'm trying to learn rail and park stuff for the first time and I'm curious as to how the place is for it, as well as if there's anything off-piste worth fucking with that early in the season
I'm a skier
>>
>>759245
that sounds more like a sharpness problem than a board flex problem

Nigga it's like you don't even ride kickers

That limp-noodle pop is so soul crushing trying to take a banana jib board over a booter
>>
>>759314
I'm a skier and don't know shit about snowboarding but with skis not having stiff enough skis will do just what he described when trying to pressure them, no matter how sharp they are.
>>
>>759314
This guy>>759361 kinda has the right words for it, I got no idea what a jib boards is or but my board literally starts bouncing around on turns.

Anyway, I decided on a Jones Flagship or Nitro Magnum.
