Actually it was the quick release thing that attached his harness to the rope that failed.

The idea for the entrance was that he would unclip from the rope and fall on his face since the Blazer was supposed to be such a doofus. It wasn't possible to do that spot with a regular harness so they used a cheap quick release version, which wasn't designed to hold that much weight.
