Royce Gracie was a good grappler using something essentially no one he fought was prepared to deal with. Even he admitted he wasn't all that as far as the Gracies went, and his family put him into the tournament because he was the runt of the litter so his win would be even more impressive. Soon as people started learning how to BJJ he essentially stopped fighting and even then his record took a huge hit.
