His character was that he was experienced and knew what he excelled at. He never outmuscled Ryback or Cena because he couldn't he had to talk shit and run away for most of his heel run. He could do strikes and he could do submissions and every once in a while he'd manage to steal a win because he had ring awareness.
I believe of the two Bryan was always portrayed as the more technically sound but Punk was the vet who had been around the block.
