Ruthless Aggression Smackdown was great.
>>

>great wrestlers working great matches at every ppv

Has there even been a single 5-star match this year? Also nowadays every ppv features like two piss breaks.

Fuck off.
>>
>>1423670
The attitude era had no 5 star matches though.
>>
>>1423455
I don't really agree, it feels more like a performance than an actual contest, they don't even bother trying to pretend it's real.
>>
>>1423689
Did it matter? Compare how invested crowds were in matches now and in the late 90s. Put D Lo Brown vs Grandmaster Sexay out there and they were hot for it.

Most of the times now, crowds usually either do nothing or get themselves over.
>>
>>1423689
I feel like Austin vs. Bret should count.

>>1423720
It's almost like WWE has actively spent a decade+ telling crowds what they want doesn't matter or something!

I'd say this came pretty close.

That or either of the Shibata vs. Big Match Ishii contests
>>
>>1423726
Crowds now instead of getting hot for a match would rather chant "JBL, JBL" or "RANDY SAVAGE" *clap clap clap*
>>
>>1423736
That's just the official branding, there was a clear tonal shift as early as tailend of 1996

>>
>>1423751
It's a combination of both. Do you think Val Venis vs Billy Gunn is a better worked match than Orton vs Del Rio? You probably would going by the crowd.

If Hogan vs Rock happened in front of today's crowd it would be regarded as one of the worst matches ever
>>
>>1423755
Whats that got to do with anything
>>
>>1423763
Orton vs. Alberto had shit matches tho.

>If Hogan vs Rock happened in front of today's crowd it would be regarded as one of the worst matches ever

Already forgotten about ONCE IN A LIFETIME huh?
>>
>>1423772
That was four years ago and the second match didn't get close to the same reaction. In fact the night after WM29 is the first time a crowd tried to get themselves over all night, and it started the trend
>>
>>1423739

I'm talking about the WWE, not outlaw circuits.
>>
>>1423455
The wrestling is much better? Says who? John Cena, the best wrestler of all time. He's so good he only has to use 4 moves
>>
>>1423699
Part of this can be blamed on the modern WWE style, which tries to make matches look as polished as possible at the expense of being repetitive. When a wrestler does a spot in a match, it's the same spot they did in every other match, performed in the same place and direction with identical technique, and shot in the same exact way.

Combine that with the style found in ROH, PWG and other American indies and you have the worst possible type of wrestling. I cringe every time I see choreographed dance routines in the middle of the ring, or whenever I see the sextuple powerbomb superplex spot, or see Sami Zayn stand there waiting for his opponent to stand up on the outside so he can safely catch him. Zero psychology.

Japan seems to have got it right, with impressive technical wrestling and spots but with execution that's realistic and varied. The psychology there makes sense and you get none of the awkward tropes you see in American wrestling. Moves are opportunistic and situational and based on the position the wrestlers manage to wrestle into. In America on the other hand, wrestlers take their opponent from a standing position and execute an unnecessary bunch of grappling and throws in order to deliver the same basic bump. Take away the strong style stiffness and it's still the most realistic and compelling wrestling in the world.
>>
>>1423778
>the second match didn't get close to the same reaction.

No fuckin' shit, REALLY?!

>>1423795
>NJPW
>outlaw

It literally isn't by any use of the expression.

WWE is more "outlaw" than it.
>>
>>1423817
Did you read the second part of that post or not?

Post WM29 crowd started the trend of crowds trying to get themselves over all night, crowds four years ago and now are completely different
>>
>>1423817
If it aint the E then its outlaw
>>
>>1423819
RAWafterMania 28 started the tradition of crowds rustling your [Little] Jimmies pal.

>crowds four years ago and now are completely different

Imagine being this wrong and out-of-touch. 'Sup Vince?

>>1423820
Sure, if you're dribbling moron.
>>
>>1423831
No they didn't, they chanted for Ryder at the start and Lesnar at the end but it wasn't all night. 29 was the start of "RANDY SAVAGE" and shit like that.

No match now has a "big fight feel" despite Cole saying it for every PPV main event. If you're lucky crowds pop for the entrances and finish, and maybe get 100 people doing a dueling chant.
>>
>>1423817
compared to WWE its outlaw
>>
>>1423847
lol confirmed for not watching that RAW if you think I was alluding to either Ryder or Lesnar

>No match now has a "big fight feel" despite Cole saying it for every PPV main event. If you're lucky crowds pop for the entrances and finish,

First of all: >listening to MAGGLE

Again: WWE has conditioned its audience not to care about things. It's spent the better part of 15 years doing it.

WWE crowds are gunshy to actually get involved with anything, seeing as how in the past few years that's been actively punished.
>>
>>1423761
>implying it wasn't off script
get worked
>>
>>1423869
What were you alluding to then? They weren't chanting for the announcers or dead wrestlers at 28, WM29 started the trend of crowds taking away from matches and putting it on themselves.

And are you telling me that the audience should have cared for Attitude Era jobbers more than 95% of todays roster? The difference between then and now is that the audience back then didn't try to get themselves over or le hijack RAW in matches. A good crowd can add to a match as much as a bad crowd can take away from it
>>
>>1423891
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQxl1XnvDOE

Imagine being this obviously newfag

>le hijack RAW in matches.

Only shit matches get hijacked lad.
>>
>>1423898
>Chanting along with kicks during matches

This isn't the same as chanting shit like "WE ARE AWESOME" or chanting for dead wrestlers. It's insufferable now
>>
>>1423909
It's still them literally "hijacking" the show, unless you'd like to explain how the WWE enjoyed having them chant for Bryan over the entire company.
>>
>>1423930
It wasn't them trying to get themselves over, it was them trying to get Bryan over.

"WE WANT BEACH BALL" and "WE ARE AWESOME" are chants where they try to get themselves over
>>
>>1423930
it was because they took bryan out the main event
>>

>>
>>1423567

You do realize the Skits/Promos/Segments are what create anticipation for the PPVs matches (aka the blow off matches) right?.

20 minute filler matches week in and week out are not the way to to push storylines and are one of the many reasons people don't give a damn about the current product.
>>
>>1423455

Getting all your spots in isn't better wrestling.
>>
>>1423810
Huh, I wanted to call you a faggot, but after reading through your post... you're right.
Strong style is very magnetic for the audience and realistic.
I cream myself every single time I see spots like:
>Jap 1 kicks Jap 2 in the gut
>Jap 2 kneels down
>Jap 1 runs towards the ropes
>Jap 2 stands up and runs after him
>Japs perform running offense that isn't flippy shit, but realistic attacks
>one of them comes on top

It's dynamic, it's smooth, it's brutal, and it doesn't require a 12-second setup.

>I am a nostalgia fag who only watches old wrestling because it reminds me of my childhood when things were simpler and happier and I hate being an adult now because it sucks so I live stuck in the past trying to recapture the happiness of carefree youth via watching the old pro wrestling of my childhood.
This isn't even about wrestling OP you just hate your life now as an adult.
So kill yourself.
>>

>>
>>1426197
you sound depressed
>>
>>1426234
Except that is literally the only reason nostalgia is a thing.
People who pine for the good old days of wrestling are not really pining for the good old days of wrestling. They just want their carefree youth back. The wrestling they happened to be watching then is just an incidental side effect.
I'm not wrong and don't be mad just because I hit a nerve.
>>
>>1426250
Was referring to the OP's tragic situation actually.
>>
>>1426254
So your telling me 97-00 raws are no better than the raws today?
>>
>>1423569
No it wasn't. There, I said it.
>>
>>1426259
I am saying confirmation bias and nostalgia goggles are a real thing.
It's all subjective anyway. Kids growing up watching Raw today will look at these Raws the same way you look at 97-00 Raws.
I am not gonna say one is objectively better than the other because that is an entirely subjective matter. There is no "correct" opinion.
>>
>>1423437
Seriously... 4chins needs to make a board for your "full contact ballet" threads.

"Alternative Sports" - kek
>>
>>1426197
I didn't watch wrestling as a kid, started last year around Summer Slam, and I definitely think modern WWE is objectively worse than old shit. Not just nostalgiafags.
>>
>>1423810
This is a great post. The point about matches being overly polished now I think can be applied to WWE generally, everything feels sterile and safe, it doesn't feel like anything has consequences, the writers might actually be mentally retarded, etc.
