Dude was actually in a feud with Diesel when the 90's came around. And of course he won it.

Then they had him wear a mask because he busted his orbital bone, ran a feud with Mankind and "upgraded" to the Lord of Darkness look.
He got switched around in the mid card until the Kane storyline got out.

If anything the 90's where the time he got his big push into mainstream as he was basically the guy that remained loyal for the WWF/WWE for so long he was reaping the rewards for it.
