It's such a weird conundrum. Any pure striking discipline loses to a good grappler, but if the striker knows how to grapple, then the grappler gets annihilated. Meanwhile, on teh street, no one knows how to grapple, so all that matters is striking.

So, I guess, pick a striking discipline, and learn wrestling as an insurance.

But Muay Thai is grappling. They just don't have ground game.

On the streets, you get haymakers and straight punches. Maybe someone who learned some tips about punches fom his big hommie who learned some tips from his unkle who learned some basic boxing from his grandfather.

Sanda/Sanshou's grappling is better than Muay Thai's grappling, and Sanda/Sanshou teaches you environmental awareness so you don't fall out of the ring and theoretically fall to your death which Muay Thai doesn't teach you.
Environmental awareness is very applicable to street fighting and self defense situations.

As time goes on, this may not be so true. With the internet, the largest body of information on planet earth, we have access to hundreds if not thousands, if not tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of instructional videos, instructional manuals, and tips about martial arts and fighting.
If MMA becomes more and more popular, and more and more people are able to access the internet, and more and more people have enough free time to pursue hobbies and interests like martial arts, the general population will be shitty MMA fighters just like just about everybody is a shitty Football player or shitty Basketball player in America.

There will be rings in community centers and equipment for people to spar.

Public Parks will have mats and rings like they have Basketball courts and tennis courts today, so people may use them to spar.
Children will grow up playing combat sports during PE class.
Everyone will know a jab-cross-hook.
Everyone will know how to throw a front kick and roundhouse kick.
Everyone will know how to clinch and knee.
Everyone will know how to do a double leg takedown.
Everyone will know how to do an arm bar and rear naked choke.

so whats the deal with kickboxing?

i'm thinkin about starting a martial art, perhaps kickboxing or muay thai. never done any before. any advice on either or what to look out for in a gym/teacher

BJJ is the best. Its been tested in the streets in the slums of Brazil and has been the dominant martial art in BJJ because it teaches you leverage and how to finish a fight something no other martial arts teach

Try to beat my Dick Jew-Jitsu. Specially designed to target the groin, which martial artists do not protect.

Because it includes several techniques for the disarming a dangerous person approaching with a dildo.
