From what I can see,
On the left:
>armor covers less surface area
but
>armor is stronger (hard shell)
On the right:
>armor covers more surface area (see collarbones, flanks, ...)
but
>armor is softer
So if you plan on falling hard, pick the left.
But if you plan on falling on specific places like your collarbones or flanks, pick the right.

In this case, the one on the left covers more surface area (lower back + hips/kidneys) while the one on the right has no hip/kidney protection.
