I major in film at college and I also studied a bit about the business of film. I'm no expert, but from its history I have a hypothesis of why this feud has failed both in the financial and critical departments.
Simply put, WWE gambled too much with a director who doesn't know how to make a good in-ring story. If you look at his history, Styles is definitely more competent in making moves look great than telling an actual story. So as a result, WWE probably made the wrong choice for an opponent when they pumped air time into this thing. They brought in a wrestler who doesn't know how to make compelling stories and thus not get people hooked in. This resulted in a match that looks great, but is very sloppy in its narrative with all of its sequences, butchering of spots, misunderstood transitions, bad booking choices like with "The Club", useless characters like the Usos, too long a match time, and flat out STOPPING the whole match just to further the Shane & Stephanie angle.
They needed one billion buys for this match just to break even but they have a writing staff who are destined to mess up the complex characters and unique stories that would have had this match good to see, thus avoiding negative reviews.
