So what's the point of Joe v. Balor 4?
Is this specifically to show that the demon can be defeated? It almost feels like this might be the last match for Balor before he gets called up.

Traditionally you put your opponent over if you're on your way out. There's no real explanation for it, it's just the way it's been for years. It's out of respect.

Most people don't watch NXT, each episode gets around 200k viewers iirc. So when they go up to the main roster, most people won't see their last match, and thus put someone else over in NXT.

It dates back to the territory days - when a wrestler was moving on to a new territory and a new audience, he'd lose on his way out to help put over and build up a guy in an effort to maintain interest in the product. Back then you didn't have national companies competing for ratings. Each promoter had their own area so it was common for them to loan each other wrestlers and help each other out. Vince was the one who changed it all and started going national and then global, and the territory guys (Verne Gagne for example) hated him for it. Vince even says his own father wouldn't have sold him the company if he knew what Vince planned to do with it.
