In the Attitude era we had two, arguably three top stars in Rock, Austin and Hunter/Shawn, with Undertaker, Angle and Foley directly beneath them. In the 80s and early 90s we had Hogan, Savage, Andre, Piper, Flair and Michaels. It doesn't take a brand split to do that, it just takes smart booking. Mid and lower careers are side shows and warm-up acts, and while you're still meant to like them, it's absolutely essential to have a credible main eventer for everyone. You can have a top guy without it being at the expense of everyone else.
