I've just recently gotten interested in it after I got a couple of goes at crewing for a keelboat.

Sailed lasers for a long time.
Most Yatch boating is pretty non-competitive unless you're on perf3 boats with spinnakers like shark, etchels etc.
Sailing dingies like lasers or fireballs is more intense than people would realize and some catamarans and catamaran races are outright dangerous.
Vendée Globe, a solo around the world race, generally has a sailor die every year around Antartica.
