Same family different methods, Cesar and Carlos are more for the competitive scene while Render and Rorion is self defense and Gracie life style.

They started a contest so they could beat people up to make people think their art was the best.
After that, people liked the idea of different martial artists fighting each other, and the contest became popular.
Afterwards, people started realizing it was better to practice multiple martial arts, and MMA became a thing.
Now, BJJ isn't even that important; we have hybrid grappling all over the place.

Also, high level grapplers will fight a lot more loose than beginners. Only exerting yourself when needed saves a lot of energy.

Score an ippon, match ends, don't initiate ground fighting, match restarts standing - so if Mifune throws ippons and gets up after botched attempts by his students (I suspect he aimed for throws rather than pins or submissions for the footage), rules require no further ground fighting to establish a winner.

I would like to point out a possible advantage to Gracie JJ. I say possible cause I don't use a GI. So...am I wrong in assuming most bjj students are used to grabbing the GI for help? I mean, one of my first teachers made it clear to me that gjj will focus more on posture/traditional control when a person isn't wearing anything or just a shirt. Now I could be brain washed here because maybe grabbing the GI is just practice for competition and bjj addresses GI/no gi.

LA fag here, I'd recommend checking the other places out, the gracie system is way overrated and is based on making money rather than building skilled athletes/bjj fighters. For example, your blue belt at the hq is given based on a test and how many classes you've taken rather than actual rolling ability. The only way to get real hardcore bjj training is getting into the higher belts and doing comps and privates. If your goal is just self defense and training under the gracie name go for it.
