Kai Thai Academy
kaithaiacademy.com

I've heard good things about this place, but every instinct in me is screaming at how shady everything is. They offer catch wrestling, which is usually a sign of shady shit when it's no-gi BJJ at best, but I checked and they're an official snake pit usa affiliate. They also offer sambo, but I can't find any information about if it's legit or not. The biggest red flag for me, though, is the lack of a price listing on their website. I called to ask about it and the guy that answered the phone said that they have a "unique payment system" but was vague about how it was unique in any way and instead said that it as $100/month for unlimited classes. Another thing is that I can't find any information on most of the coaches here. Overall, the place seems too good to be true.

they give black belts to 8 year olds
they are a full blown mcdojo in every sense of the word, you have to buy their gear, you sign a long term contract, and you pay fees your entire time you are there.

the little guy in there had it right, when you are that big you are bound to have superstars. I'm not impressed by them putting out 1 notable fighter out of the literally thousands maybe even tens of thousands of people who have trained there over the last 25 years.

if you live in the NY/NJ area, tiger schulmans is a laughing stock, if you walk into any gym and say that's where you trained you will literally be laughed off the mat

I don't know what's with gyms not telling people how much their programs cost.

Gyms and dojos should have YouTube videos of what typical classes are like throughout a week.

Just having these two things could save a lot of people from going through a lot of bullshit.
>>
>>1083755
My gym has a very active Facebook and Twitter, a blog where the coaches post interviews or articles about conditioning, technique, nutrition, or philosophy, and a youtube channel where they post tips on how to get better at BJJ, examples of the class structure, techniques, and they even made a video giving people a virtual tour of the academy. They even have a website where they post everything I just mentioned, as well as other things like recordings of fights or tournaments. It still astounds me sometimes how active they are online.

Looks a bit shady. There's a lot of McDojo-ish practices going on and I can't find any amateur or professional records for the "former professional mma fighter" coaches. Also, they named themselves after Bruce Lee even though no one there has lineage relating to him. I'd suggest a pass unless it's literally the only martial arts place nearby.

If I were you I'd go with Gracie Barra in Pearland. Advatage doesn't have any black belt instructors, just a couple of brown belts and purple belts. It'd be fine if there weren't any gyms with black belt instructors, but the GB gym has a 5th degree and a 3rd degree blackbelt, and they can probably teach you all sorts of little things that come with experience.

Late to this but I'll give you a quick run down.

If you run often, you are bound to get an injury at some point, however, that shouldn't put you off. Barefoot running is good, but in modern times where the streets are disgusting and full of broken glass and stuff, you should instead invest in some minimal running shoes.

A high heel might be tempting to use because at first it's more comfortable and you don't slam into the ground so much, but it promotes bad running form where you heel strike, if you want to get into minimal/barefoot running, you should think about striking mid-foot and rolling through the toes, it's preferable to move your legs faster in smaller steps than it is to run with bigger strides.

Hope that helps you, anon!

Spot the newfag.

As long as they teach you BJJ and Judo with no MMA asspulls (restricting all the techniques they teach you to conform to a ruleset, like everyones favourite new age combat sport, as opposed to martial arts where they teach you every technique as long and the practice (practice as in to learn the skills) of those techniques among your classmates is ethical and undamaged, but still dangerous and effective in practise (practise as in technical application in combat).

If they aren't holding back your knowledge, BJJ + Judo is gold, and all the best of every realm of grappling.

as for gym victus (muay thai) there is an outstanding majority of "muay thai" 'schools' that claim muay thai, whom are actually just would be kickboxers or krav maga and karate (read Zen Do Kai) instructors making a quick buck of the increase in popularity of a similar foreign sport.
So basically, asked them if they trained in Thailand, or if they instruct any legitimate competitive fighters and that's how you get your answer for that one.

It is in fact possible to learn a martial art and effectively apply it without a teacher and or sparring.

A common myth is that one is unable to perceive the flaws on one's movements when mimicking the movements of a martial art, and that a teacher is required to detect these flaws in form and aid in correcting them.
Detecting the flaws in one's form can easily be done with the utilization of attention to detail and a mirror.
It would take some very severe cognitive impairments and or lack of effort to be unable to do this, given that adiquate information is provided.

Another common myth is that muscle memory is required to apply martial arts, and that one would be unable to participate in combat without getting a gluteus maximus kicking.
One reason people believe this myth is because of how much more quickly humans tend to react to a stimuli with muscle memory rather than conscious reaction time. They fail to understand that this in no way means that conscious reaction cannot be utilized. With higher aptitude for reaction time and or training, one who may have never engaged in hand to hand combat will be able to perform as well if not better than one who has trained muscle memory for hand to hand combat, not to mention how muscle memory can be used in combat if trained with proper knowledge and understanding beforehand.

Experience is only as creditable as how it's interpreted.

Not saying that learning with a teacher isn't almost always more efficient.

If you're in the top 1st percentile of intelligence, are educated in scientific practices, and have a very detailed and reliable source of martial arts information, you could try it out, document the process, and communicate your results.

Training with champions and seeing firsthand what it takes to reach the top is important if you want to be a champion yourself. If you don't want to be a professional fighter you should skip it.
