awwwww yeah its the basho thread muhfuggas!
>>1064189
Hell yeah, best times of the year
well? day 1 when?
>>1066000
Day 1 makuuchi matches start at 11pm PST this Saturday, early Sunday morning in most of North America, or Sunday afternoon JST
Just a few more days
did osunaarashi died?
>>1067496
His absence due to knee surgery dropped him down to Juryo, he will be participating in this basho and aims to win the Juryo and make it back up next tournament.
A real shame though.
I thought the Basho started last weekend and I was looking through the shitshow of WWE threads to find this one.
What does Kotoshogiku have to do to be promoted to Yokozuna? Only a win will do it?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umXamWPt0VE
>>1067893
With Kakuryu into considering, he's probably got it with a 14-1 even if he doesn't take the Yusho.
The deliberation committee might be a bit more reserved though, considering Kotoshogiku's past inconsistency.
Day 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbF8gUThyzM
Thanks for making this thread, I've always been a bit interested in sumo, and this is an excellent way to learn more about it.
Quick question: I heard that a while back it turned out that sumo was being rigged by the yaks, and it lost a lot of its honour as a sport. Has it recovered, to any degree, or is it still seen about as real as wrassling?
>>1072015
Basically everyone involved in the 2010 scandals was purged pretty hard, there are tons of new systems in place to prevent that from happening again.
There are groups that still see a conspiracy involved, but most agree that it's clean these days. It's finally just recovered it's popularity back, and things seem to be positive.
Any tips on finding a "favorite" rikishi for a newfag?
The techniques all seem really similar, and of course they all look rather similar. How do you choose?
>>1072038
You'll only figure out which guys fighting style you like after watching them for awhile, when you first start watching you'll probably latch on to rikishi that are memorable for reasons other than technique
The white guys are all pretty memorable, gagamaru, aoiyama, tochinoshin, amuru
Osunaarashi is Egyptian and you can't miss him, loves to slap and always looks happy when he's fighting
Aminishiki is the oldest rikishi and always wears his lucky double knee braces that stand out, he's got a wide variety of interesting technique too
>>1071852
Those Yokozuna matches, interesting day 1
Shouhouzan vs Myougiryuu was a nice street fight!
Also, is it just me or Tochinoshin gained some weight since last basho?
Finally, what the hell happened today? Two out of the three Yokozunas losing?
>>1067539
That is a shame, good to know he is better though.
>>1072038
You will find a wrestler that you really like after watching a basho or two.
West Maegashira #4 SOKOKURAI is a late withdrawal from day 2
Day 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmaxJDRkAiw
>>1073869
Did you see that fucking victory spin?
>>1074143
Loved that spin, lots of cool fights today
I became a fan of chiyootori today.
>that bark from Kotoyuuki, then that mada and then finally losing immediately after the match starts
Lol what was that Koto?
>>1074244
Really hoping that matta was intentional, makes the whole thing even funnier
Hakuhou slapping some sense into him
Day 3:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STwYxZKU5N8
>>1079021
>mfw the sumo app spoils my day the second I wake up
>>1079045
The sumo app is pretty good, but the fact that you still can't hide spoilers is ridiculous
>>1079054
At least chiyoootori gave a good account of himself. I'm saddened by his loss, but to watch the fight you see a good match which is all you can ask for in the end.
>all Ozekis are undefeated and every Yokozuna has one loss
Good sumo. Hopefully the Ozekis keep this pace up
Day 4: http://youtu.be/xwFvykMUF88
>>1081452
Fuckdammit chiyoootori, its like you want to be demoted.
>>1081452
>Kotoyuki
>bark
>lose again in one second
New Kotoyuki meta?
Also, Hakuhou is very mad.
>>1081979
What is he mad about though?
>>1081995
Losing in the the first three matches I am guessing.
Hakuhou might KO someone soon.
>>1081995
More importantly, Hakuho ordered both Kotoyuki and Chiyootori to stop Barking before bouts about 6 months ago. Chiyootori listened and stopped, Kotoyuki said he wouldn't.
Kotoyuki's stablemaster even backed him and lodged a formal complaint. Nothing came of it but unsurprisingly they don't get along anymore.
>>1083315
Interesting. I know it bothers people that chiyoootori bounces before getting set for tachiai, but didn't know about the barking.
Also, he wins perhaps his least spirited looking match of the bansho, but a win is a win.
Day 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9orTCgSXrhQ
>>1083501
>Kakuryuu vs Takarafuji
>Gyoji is struggling to survive and ref the match at the same
Aoiyama held for quite long against Hakuhou, impressed.
Does anyone here know what constitutes a disqualification?
I know there are illegal moves but I've never seen anyone called on one.
Is there a number of times you can jump ahead on the tachiai before they just award the match to your opponent?
Do they never call something like "unnecessary roughness"? Because that one yokozuna is being a huge dick right now.
>>1084735
There are very few rules in Sumo, but the short list of things that disqualify you are:
Punching with a closed fist
Hairpulling
Eye pokes
Kicking above the waist or at the groin
Hitting the head on both side simultaneously upon the ears
You will see disqualification for Hairpulling semi frequently, even if it's by accident they call you on it.
Roughness is never illegal though, and it's part of the fun for many viewers. You won't get disqualified for too many false starts either, the system of mutual consent puts the blame on both rikishi.
Of all the possibilities, I never expected to watch gagamaru get pushed straight back out of the ring.
Day 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa0U7_-npXs
>>1085807
Solid day, kotoyuki had quite a match
Still so up in the air, it's great
My boy Ikioi, gets promoted, does shit, gets demoted, wrecks face.
>>1085807
>my boy Mitakeumi wins
>Sayotama wins by fucking KIMARITE KAINAHINERI
>KotoHOOki wins
>Yoshikaze defeats Harumafuji
Everyday is amazing day at the basho.
Is there a hard rule for how far a rikishi gets promoted or demoted from one basho? Do the maegashira go up or down one level per basho?
>>1086243
It also depends on other Rikishi results as well.
that fucking owl
The only thing about hooting is that when you lose, you look like a jackass.
>>1083501
goddamit kakyuyu dont funk with my heart
>>1086243
Ultimately the banzuke committee makes all the choice for everyone lower than Sekiwake, if you get a winning record you'll go up, if you get a losing one you'll go down. They decide how much based on your performance.
Ozeki has hard rules for promotion and demotion, and Yokozuna has a deliberation committee as well as a citizens committee that makes the final decisions.
I personally think having 4 Yokozuna at the same time is preposterous.
Especially Koto who is already close to retirement and has been a mediocre Ozeki so far.
Win the basho or get out of consideration
Day 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5_m2B2uUI4
>>1087706
Nice showing from Kotoshogiku, and a cool throw in that Ikioi match
Excited for Ikioi vs Kisenosato tomorrow
>>1064022
Those are some big guys
After tomorrow there is only going to be one undefeated rikishi. The bout is between an Ozeki and a Maegashira? Lol what is going on?
This basho is crazy and the crowd are loving it. Much rowdier than usual.
Man, I really love it when the rikishi just stand in the middle of the ring and pound each other in the face. The crowd loves it too.
Day 8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvXCBYrufXs
When did Hakuhou morph into Asashoryu? Absolute mad man.
Hakuho vs Yoshikaze from today in HD, if you really want to see that blood flying
https://youtu.be/0vKvXu7ox3s
>>1089630
I got to make this into a webm. It much more violent from another angle.
>>1089630
>all those dislikes
Do the Japanese really don't like Hakuho that much?
>>1090390
They like Hakuho in general, I think many perceive an unnecessary push after the match had completed.
>>1091166
Wasn't uneccesary imo
>>1091234
I agree, but they expect Yokozuna to be absolutely perfect.
>>1091234
It was a few days ago.
Translation of Yoshikaze's media comments from kintamayama:
Yoshikaze: "You've been asking about the dame-oshi (extra shove) so much but you aren't asking about the substance of the sumo and that's a pity. OK, I got shoved an extra shove-happy now??"
>>1091323
Of course he's going to say that because
>insulting a yokozuna
Is cultural and career suicide, to probably be followed up by expected literal suicide.
>>1091323
I find it funny that kintamayama is Jewish, and chose to put kin in his weeb handle.
>>1091351
While you are right, I think there may be a subtler dig in there from Yoshikaze.
I may be misinterpreting it, but I think Yoshikaze is saying: Look at the Sumo, that was not Yokozuna Sumo, it was brutal and belligerent. It lacked beauty of movement. You should be mad about his poor form, not the extra shove.
Day 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p76QzP17baY
>>1091579
Well I can't say I'm happy about where the Yusho race is going, but time will tell
Some fun matches today but nothing all that special
http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1619906.html
Don't speak much Japanese, but it looks like Hakuho is getting a talking to for that match against Yoshikaze. The fall broke the leg of the judge he landed on
First time I've ever seen Goeidou have a good basho. He is usually desperately clinging on to his Ozeki rank
>>1092076
To be honest I was hoping to see him get demoted, but it looks like someone lit a fire under all the Ozeki.
The race has thinned out, Hakuho is fucking on fire and pissed, Goueidou is fighting for his rank. Personally I think there is still time for the for the 7-2 rikishis to catch up. I have a feeling the craziness is just starting.
>>1092182
As long as chiyoootori gets two more wins and secures a kachikoshi, I will be happy.
>>1092182
You're right, I just really don't want to see Kisenosato take it, but I think that's pretty unlikely even now.
Day 10: https://youtu.be/KfW25QMbYkI
I think I love Satoyama
>>1096339
Kisenosato vs Kakuryu was quite a match
>>1096339
>Aminishiki actually flies out of the ring
Amazing
That was unreal form Kisenosato. He dominates Kakuryu 30-15 in head to head.
Tomorrow he faces Hakuho.
Day 11: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAK7BHd8AcI
CHIYOOOTORI WAS ROBBED
>>1098233
Knew Hakuhou had it in him.
I went to the January tournament in Tokyo, it was pretty dope. I can post a few photos for you fellas later
>>1098460
That would be pretty cool, please do.
Hakuho vs Goeido tomorrow. Oh shit.
Goeido looks like someone said they'll kill his family if he doesn't win
Day 12: https://youtu.be/a-R3bpBTWDw
>>1100110
Hakuho is a fucking rocket!
Hakuho is officially not fucking around anymore. Terunofuji doing well considering he's injured.
>>1100110
Hakuho ain't messin' around anymore
>>1100461
Impressed by Terunofuji even though he's hurting.
Rankings after today:
11 wins
●○○○○○○○○○○○ Y1w Hakuho
10 wins
○○○○○○○○○○●● O1w Kisenosato
○○○○●○○○○○○● O2e Goeido

>>1100540
Now I want to play Othello, thanks.
>>1098505
Sorry i'm a little late fellas, works been rough. here a few of the January tournament pics. the stadium only seats like 10k people so it's pretty small. that being said i had sort of last minute seats as such they are a little further back but i got them for the final days of the tournaments so i got to see the yokozuna ceremony and whatnot.
>>1101669
>>1101672
i have a few more but they aren't amazing. hope you guys enjoy them whenever the thread picks up again
Day 13: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhwkUT0BddM
>>1101782
Glad you enjoyed it, i think i might stick around for these threads
If you attend one of these matches, do you have to sit in seiza the whole time? I see everyone in the front rows appears to be doing it, the people in the box seats seem to be doing it.
Seiza is unpleasant to gaijin, you see.
Chiyoootori earns a hard fought kachikoshi on the second last day of the basho.
Day 14: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqzN2VDk3OY
>>1104467
Good matches today but still no guarantees of a playoff just yet
Are he banners just for today? What is normal pay for a Sumo?
>>1104862
depends on rank too
>>1104467
the fuck is this banners thing now
>>1102813
The upper floors have regular seating, I've also often seen people sitting cross legged in the boxes. Whether it's culturally acceptable to do so, I don't know.
>>1104862
>>1105158
Banners are everyday, Kintamayama just doesn't usually show them.
Sumo base incomes are quite low, but the system allows for nearly constant raises based on performance. Hakuho is estimated to be making a few million US as his salary, plus all the banner money he wins.
The wikipedia article explains it reasonably well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mochiky%C5%ABkin
Based Kotoyuki won't bow down to no one
Final day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOoFlYH0M7E
i love it when the japs get mad at haku henka
GIVING ZERO FUCKS
Absolute madman
>>1105963
Good tournament overall, some real interesting dynamic from the Ozekis for the first time in a long time. I'm not surprised Kotoshogiku couldn't perform like people hoped, but it was neat to see both Kisenosato and Goeido pick up the slack.
>>1105971
>>1106084
That was anti-climactic, but also hilarious damn. That boo-ing was something else, a few of those zabuton were definitely aimed at Hakuho too.
Is Hakuhou the Stone Cold Steve Austin if Sumo?
>>1106553
get out
>>1102813
i went to the January tournament and they have plenty of normal seats which are pretty comfy. They are a little on the smaller size but comfy none the less.
>>1104862
>>1105158
here's a picture of the banners i took
>>1105963
Hakuho is absolute madman! I can see why people are disappointed(I am too), but if I remember correctly he hasn't henka once during this basho except the last match. He rekted it with every match.
I sent chiyoootori some fan mail congratulating him on his kachikoshi.
I have great doubts it will be translated and read to him, but its still nice.
>>1107380
did you watch the interview? All I've seen was this from Jason's channel
>He basically wouldn't answer most of the questions, and then he started to tear up, apparently because he has now equaled his father's accomplishments in Mongolian sumo. His father won 6 annual tournaments, so in his mind, that equates to 6x6=36 honbasho. So personally, this win meant a lot to him, but he really didn't explain that - that insight was all provided by the English play-by-play guy.
>>1107632
Yep I saw it live with the English play by play, it's a weird interview. He does say that the Henka "Was not on purpose" or something to that affect near the end and that he's sorry for doing it.
Not sure if Jason's channel shows the whole thing.
The next tournament will be in May at the Kokugikan in Tokyo and begins on May 8th.
