try changing it up. Pet softer and/or in a different place. Try lightly massaging with your fingertips instead of petting. Like rubbing his legs. Mind where you approach from. Make sure he sees your hand coming towards him so he knows exactly what's going on and what's touching him.

All else fails, slip him some roofies and have your way with him. Petting, of course.
