So I found this outside my house and we couldn't figure out what it is. If any of you amazing people could help me, I would appreciate it. We didn't kill the little guy so he is probably still alive, by the way. And I just want the information to satisfy my curiosity because he looks like nothing around here. Perhaps a moth? I don't know much about bugs.

It's a male dobsonfly.

Thank you very much, nobody I asked knew what it was. That's why I love /an/, best part of 4chan.

If you find a similar looking one with much smaller pincers nearby, stay away. It's a female, and those fuckers can pinch.
Does that bite hurt as much as it looks?

the male's pinchers are big and just for show.
The female's are small compact and pack a punch

The male's bite barely even pinches. It's the females you have to watch out for. I've had one draw blood on me once. Kind of weird you're already seeing them. They're not due until early next month.

Neat.

>someone on /an/ with some intelligence, who doesn't kill it on sight like a degenerate philistine
that's pretty cool
I'm disappointed we don't see such scimitar-lips creatures on teh west coast.
