Why are retractable leashes still even a thing? No dog owner I've seen that

I use one for my cat specifically for the reason I can't control him

It just seems like every person that uses one of these gives their dog 7 feet of leash, which is more than enough for them to cross the sidewalk and attack or try to play with other dogs.

this is why we have a strict no-retractable leash policy at work (animal shelter) or at company events. they're a pain in the ass and it's way too easy to misuse them

We use one for our daschund so she can sniff for a bit while we are walking. We keep it short on sidewalk areas and when coming into contact with other people.

It's not like my cat walks alongside me. I take him to the park and having a long leash is good for me and I can stop it from extending if he's going in a direction I don't want him to go. I don't have the problems that dog owners do with retractable leashes
