It is either the entrance to a critter's tunnel OR it is where a critter was excavating for food. Skunks, for example, dig up wasps' nests underground and eat all the larvae and eggs. Hard to say which this is without more details. It kinda looks like claw marks in the now-dry mud. Does this area get watered by sprinklers?

Looks like a crawfish hole to me. It is near some water? Maybe a ditch?

Where you live OP down in louisiana where I live they are pretty common

OP here I live in Cary NC. Not a crawfish hole. The hole is in a place where water collects and tends to stay pretty wet for a while after a big rain. There's 3 or 4 more holes the same size just behind the fence in the picture a few feet away from the one in the picture. The hole in the picture is the only one that has all that mud built up around the entrance though, the others don't have any mud build up.

Mole? It looks decently sized and like it goes down a ways, so that would be my guess. They're pretty cute little buggers
