Most of those dogs did their jobs as watchdogs.
If you want a man stopper you need to start with a suitable breed and additional training and generally have 2 dogs.
You want your dogs in the 90lb+ range, it needs to be strong enough to take down the meth addict who cannot feel pain that just kicked your door down.

Looks like they did their job as watch dogs. They barked and barked and barked. You have to train most dogs to actually attack an intruder. It isn't in many dogs nature to protect property.
Besides, I imagine that a dog mauling an intruder will probably get the dog put down and you with a lawsuit.
the traits of a "good" guard dog are inherently the opposite of a well-socialized dog that won't get you in hot water when they maul someone. if you think you can magically train a dog to maul only some people sometimes and know exactly when that is, you're an idiot that's playing with fire. there's a reason almost every human attack PDD we get in is "hurr my guard dog attacked someone by accident"
id rather have a well-socialized dog that's friendly and only barks at unfamiliar people and stops on command than a ticking time bomb that will be put down because he accidentally ripped my neighbor's face off

I disagree, alot of dogs of a certain type, (I will refrain from using the term breed because the more I read from books on dogs the more assinine the kennel club standards become to me) exhibit the ability to identify threatening behaviour from normal social interaction. These breeds MUST be socialised in order for them to be a good guard dog. If they are not socialised they will see any approach as a threat.

studies show that the mere presence of a dog is effective at repelling intruders, not even the showing of aggression. if the dog is barking, most won't take the chance

Well my family bred Dobermanns and family friends bred Dogue de Bourdeuxs. Im familiar with their respective behaviours.
when I was a kid my dad raised some pretty smart dogs. We had a male, australian shepherd/border collie, and female, border collie. They were decently socialized and we used to have a ranch for a couple of years and they became damn smart. You could tell the male to sit down by the door and he'd do it. They were also good guard dogs they'd bit my sketchy drug dealer grandma and cousins before. I miss them ;w; I MISS THEM SO MUCH. 12 years later.. fuck

I don't have guard dogs, I have alarm dogs. I am much happier that way. They alert me then I see who is there. Also I never leave doors or windows unlocked. In my experience, burglars, if they hear a dog barking will move on to an easier target.

Nope, I'm the liaison between animal control, the police, and the shelter. Dealing with shitshows after a dog bites someone and is seized by animal control and is being held at the shelter is pretty much my job.
