I am starting to regret getting a dog. It has led to arguments between me and other family members. Anyone else on /an/ feel like this?
>>
>>2110017
I don't regret it, but I have had my arguments.

Usually it's
>no I don't care if your little mongoloid is allergic or afraid I'm not putting the dog outside or in the bedroom
>he's more a member of the family than you, and this is his house too
>if you don't like it leave, or better yet fuck off and die
>>
I spent a good two minutes looming at that picture wondering if that's my sister or not.

But no not really. At worst me and my three siblings fought over who the cat and dogs get to sleep with.
>>
>>2110017
I've fostered dogs that led to arguments and eventually having to bring the dog back. My suggestion is if it's young or a puppy, re-home it now because it will only get much harder to re-home when it's even one month older.
>>
>>2110030
Is that common, getting a dog returned? I fostered a dog once and she got returned twice due to the dumbest reasons. (She jumps on the couch, she whines to go outside, etc) and the first guy wanted to fight me after a 2am phonecall to me about how I 'better take this fucking dog before I kill it'. It was extremely off putting but they had passed the qualifications and he was extremely nice and polite when I had gone over for a house check.
>>
>>2110032

Yeah it's really common and people shouldn't be so casual about it. It is a big deal for the animal at any stage of its life.

I had this problem with the rattlesnake I brought into the house when I were younger.

Later, I made my dad take care of it when I moved to a different city. He was hella tsundere for little rittle rattle.
>>

Befriend the dog, take care of the dog, love the dog, bury the dog.

Why would you even get a dog if you're not 100% sure to keep it your whole life? Were not talking about a reptile, dogs are capable of most human emotions and will be stressed out the rest of his life if he gets moved all the time.

What is the problem?
>>
>>2110032
I don't have raw numbers or statistics, but it does SEEM to happen a lot. My theory is that when people adopt a dog rather than buy it, they don't feel like it's as much of their responsibility. There's more disconnect and the idea that it's the shelter/rescue etc responsibility to make the dog behave well in a home, so when it has a mistake the owners have someone to shift blame and fall back on
>>
OP, what kind of dog is it?
>>
>>2110058
I work at a shelter. It happens a lot. There was a dog returned for 5th time the other day because she nipped. When her owners left her outside of the shelter with another worker she just fell over and can't seem to adjust back into shelter life.

That's why there are adoption fees, why expensive psychologists are more "effective" and birthday presents is still a thing, even if the person in question doesn't really need your crap. Is it like the contrarian feelings of buyer's remorse or a miniature Stockholm syndrome every time, but most people not spending a sum on the thing just not care about it afterwords.
>>
Still waiting to hear what the problem is. If you want solutions for keeping the peace, we need to know what adversity your facing and why. And don't sugar coat it

I will say if you're dog is under 9 months, that shit storm is probably not going to stop until it is over 9 months. The first 9 months are the worst. But if you tell us what the problem is, we can give advice on how to make it manageable to where it's not getting in their way.

As shit as /an/ is, we have centuries of combined experience dealing with this stuff. All of us constantly finding new and creative ways to tackle challenges in pet companionship.

>most people not spending a sum on the thing just not care about it

This is why I support declawing. Spend $300 on the oversized rodent, and you feel invested in it and are less likely to drop it off in a box outside the animal shelter at 4:30am when no one is looking.
>>
>>2110124
But that's not true, anon. The percent of declawed cats surrendered to the shelter per declawed cat population in that area is generally the same and in some places higher.

I hope my family regrets getting the new dog. When we moved, despite my protests, we sent our old one off to the pound (where a friend working there confirmed he was euthanized days later) because he was going blind and got lost in the backyard often, so instead of asking to go out he'd just piss and shit in the house. My mom insisted she didn't want an animal filthing up the carpets again.
FOUR MONTHS LATER they buy a god damn puppy.
>>
>>2110121
I was going more for the fact that a shelter or rescue will always be there to take the animal back, and that when people rescue an animal, they feel less like it's solely theirs and more like they are taking on someone else's responsibility, and therefore disassociate responsibility from themselves. Kind of like getting a used car. Even if the dog rescued was a puppy, it can grow up unsocialized and biting strangers but the owners can turn around and say 'well obviously it was abused as a puppy', 'the shelter never told us this dog was aggressive', etc. Some places charge absurd amounts with no refunds and still get a decent amount of returns.

"I keep thinking I'm out and they keep putting me back in."

How awful.
>>
I'm a landlord, and I'm starting to regret letting my tenant have a dog. It's a big one and capable of doing harm. It's totally uncontrolled, she does not see dog ownership as a skill one can develop. Basically one of 'those' owners. I'm kinda scared to be in the back yard with it, and I'm not scared of dogs. Now she wants a 'fully trained' six month old husky / pitbull from her back-yard breeder friend. Fuck that.
>>
>>2110017
no, I moved out of my parent's house when I was 17 and never moved back in.

I do what I want.
>>
>>2110140
>a shelter or rescue will always be there to take the animal back

I hear this alot. Where do you people live that shelters are so fucking well-funded? Every city I've lived in, the shelters had a strict policy against taking any animal that wasn't injured. They didn't just take any unwanted pet. No unwanted christmas presents, no buyer's remorse, no returns on previous adoptions, no behavioral problems ... They had their hands full even outside of that ruleset.
>>
i have a rabbit that i kind of regret getting.. as i typed this i watched her go up so somethingt and nudge it.. and as soon as she figured out it was a bit tippy.. she fucking throttled it and tipped it over

..i'd be sad if she disappeared/died tho

having said that my dog is the best.. i can't imagine NOT having a dog.. train your dog better, walk it more, treat it better

you'll never find a better friend
>>
>>2110252
what shitholes have you been living in? the shelter I work at takes in any stray domestic animal, excluding feral cats, injured or not. and our other location accepts owner surrenders at no charge, excluding animals that would be euthanized anyway once in our custody due to extreme medical or behavioral issues. and in those cases we do provide humane euthanasia services to the public.
>>
>>2110239
Tell her you don't want more than one dog. And if she gets another, kick her ass out.

>>2110252
NY, except every shelter is different. Some shelters here only take strays, some only take owner surrenders some will only take animals that are healthy and non aggressive, some will only take in sick animals. Some are more funded than others. But in NY there are a lot more pet savvy people willing to adopt and spay/neuter, and probably more people willing to donate and participate in humane society activities

No. Your weaboo jones boyfriend controls your life because you only work part time minimum wage still.

If he's just renting out his house (small time landlord), I'm sure keeping the peace is a top priority for him. To me, it sounds like he's trying his best. Tenants never make it easy. It's rough.

Otherwise, the state he's in and active lease will decide the rest. But I'd bet there's nothing in that lease that says a tenant is allowed to let their dogs run free in the backyard. Most leases I say say if you're dog is a little unhinged, the landlord has the right to tell you to fuck off.

But again, keeping the peace is always preferred.

Where the fuck is OP? I wanted a story god dammit.

I have a dachshund great Dane mix (some weirdo mexicans tried to make a designer breed) that I got from the shelter and he can be a little shit sometimes. He didn't understand anything because the previous owners didn't speak English and never trained him. I thought about taking him back the first 6 months because he won't stop shitting/pissing all over the place when I'm gone or all over himself if I tried the kennel. but I just got used to it and clean it up every day after a year of trying to fix it. He's great otherwise I love him
>>
I had a cat that I love so much but my housemates hate. She would always meow at people's doors at night, and would get really needy and cuddly at bad times. She's at my parents house now and i miss her so much. I get really sad when my housemates talk about how much they hate her.
>>
>>2110017
when did you get it OP? I've heard that people can get something similar to postpartum when they get new dogs. There was a period where I panicked because "Oh god am I really able to take care of this dog I just decided to get him and now I've got him oh geez can I handle him" for a few days after I got my puppy, but it passed.

I'm living alone though. Why did you get a dog without the consent of everyone in the house?
>>
>>2110024
This makes u sound like an asshole more than anything...

>Were not talking about a reptile
>Implying reptiles don't get stressed or somewhat attached to the smell of their owners
Go fuck yourself with a rusty mace, bitch
>>
>>2111304
Tell them off. You shouldn't have to hear their shit talking. Especially after the fact. Sounds like they have no skills with human beings other than their own whiny selves. And it sounds like you're the underdog, since you don't have a backbone enough to defend your cat.

Am I a faggot for wanting a husky that looks a certain way as my pet?

I mean, I would do tons of research, I grew up around dogs, I would do anything for this dog, but still I want it to look like the vision I have in my head, or else I wouldn't get it?

they're actually not.

dogs aren't conscious, they're not capable of emotion.
