What is this baby creature? My friend found it on the ground in some dirt. We think it's a rabbit but we're not sure. If it is, what is the next step?
>>
ofuck man, why arent you keeping it warm?
>>
>>2101204
We are now. We got a warm towel and heating pad going. It's less than 10 days old because it's eyes are still closed
>>
>>2101213
Next what you need to do is milk your fattest friend's titties, that way the little aminal has something to nourish it back to healthy
>>
The shape of this thing makes me think capybara, but I have no evidence to back this up.
>>
Hello mr rato
>>
>>2101200
It is most likely a gopher. It needs to be warm. Either put it in a shoebox with some t-shirts on a heating pad set to medium. (Heating pad, then box, then t-shirts, then gopher), or if you have any gloves you can fill them with warm water and tie them and change them every few hours. Get it to a professional as soon as possible, babies this young have a high mortality rate in care, so it basically has no chance in private care, no matter how good your intentions are. Don't feed it any milk products, btw. Other animals can't really break down cow milk, and it can cause death from bloating in little ones.

Realistically, this gopher is dead by now. It needs to be on heat, and judging by how saggy and hollow her belly looks she hasn't been fed in a while. Not your fault, op. Nature is cruel.
>>
it can't go long without eating and drinking. if it's still at milk age you're probably fucked unless you find a mature milking one or try goat milk
>>
Capybaras are fucking enormous
>>
We've got it in a box with a heating blanket and towel. It's still alive and we're about to feed it a kittin milk replacement formula mixed with heavy whipping cream for calories. Then we read we have to stimulate it's bowels so we have some cotton swabs to do that. Seeing if it makes it through the night will be the biggest concern. I'd not, it'll have a proper burial.
>>
it's mother would've come back. you and your friend killed it.
>>
>>2101289
shoulda called a professional as soon as you found it. i'm sorry, but it's probably going to die.
>>
>>2101308
We live in an area with lots of stray cats and it had been there for 2-3 before we came back to check on it. It would've died either way. At least now if it passes it will be warm and safe. Plus we are prepared to give it a viking funeral.
>>
>>2101325
>it had been there for 2-3 before we came back to check on it.
so you chased off it's mother repeatedly and that means you didn't kill it somehow.
>At least now if it passes it will be warm and safe.
kidnapped and starved to death ≠ warm and safe.
>Plus we are prepared to give it a viking funeral.
dead babies do love fire, you've got me there. oh wait, not dead babies, stupid teens. stupid teens love fire.
>>
>>2101327
It sounds like you are set in your negative ways so I won't bother trying to argue with you; I've found brick walls don't make good debate partners. Regardless of what you think happened, we will care for it to the best of our ability, including feeding it, which you would know it if you had bothered to read that we bought food specifically for it. Besides that, we'll care for it as best as we can and hope she makes it.
>>
>>2101332
I don't kill things out of ignorance or think wasting money makes me a good person.

Thank you for doing what you can to save it. Is it drinking?

And I wouldnt mix the cream with the formula.

Ignore the idiots and keep doing what you're doing. Should the poor thing be doing well, I would suggest contacting a registered animal welfare, major zoo, or veterinary society if possible, and quickly. They may be able to offer advice and/or house them appropriately. Best of luck, friend.

hello /an/
>>
>>2101336
Op killed the thing.
>>

the biggest problem you are going to have is the bloating. Do not feed it kitten milk with whipping cream. It will die because you killed it. Call a professional you turd.

Here she is in the box with blankets and a heating pad. She ate a little formula but not too much. I think we got her to pee afterwards but we're wake up early and try to feed her and hope she's alive. If she's alive tomorrow we'll contact some places and see what they say to do.

It lived through the night. She squirmed too much to feed her a good breakfast so I just fed her again and she ate pretty well. I'll try one more time before bed so make up for the weak breakfast. She is now hopping when we try to swaddle her for feeding and making small sounds.
>>
>>2101912
If some /b/tards got this little thing, it would be propablye eaten or something worse. You're one of really good anons I've seen on 4chan.

squirrels this tiny need feeding every 3 hours. Take it to a professional you fuck.
>>
>>2101923
It's not a squirrel, it's a rabbit. And we're looking at taking it to a proper place soon. The closest sanctuary is an hr away so my friend is gunna try calling some places like vets or similar things and see what they say to do.

why would an hour's travel be too much for you if you've already gone to all this trouble to save it? it's cool what you're doing, but if it's gonna have the best chance of survival it needs professional care and resources.
>>
>>2101977
I'm not saying we're not willing to take it there, but we're looking at other options as well. We'll most likely end up taking her there tomorrow morning.

Update?
>>
>>2101912
I'm sure there's a wildlife rehab center around your area. They'll take care of it. I'm guessing you're in the southern hemisphere or something because it's not time for squirrels to be giving birth yet.
>>
She has survived another night. We got her to eat again last night and were able to stimulate a bowel movement. I think my friend fed her breakfast. Later we should be taking her to a proper place that can care for her. I'd like to keep her as it seems we've been doing all right so far, but we could've just gotten lucky and we don't have space for a rabbit/aren't allowed to own one.
>>
>>2102420

You aren't allowed to "own" wildlife, nor are you legally allowed to be providing the "care" that you have been. be prepared for major eye rolls when you tell them how long you've had it and what care you've provided.

The number one killer of rehab animals is "over rescue". You know, the kind of idiot that takes in an animal and feeds it cat milk and heavy cream. You think you are "caring" for it, but you are depriving it of the balanced nutrients it needs in these crucial first weeks.
>>
>>2102444
He knows that. Did you not read the post? He admitted that he can't properly care for it and said he's taking it to a rehab center soon.
>>
>>2102453

Then he should have taken it to a rehab day one, not day three, maybe if he has time.
>>
>>2102444
Do you need to join the other guy in getting your ass blasts inspected or are you going to be civil?

I'm not retarted, anyone should know that unless they are a trained specialist that does this for a living, they won't be able to provide proper care for it. That being said, we are following the steps it says to follow on various rabbit care websites and while I know you're supposed to take everything on the Internet with a grain of salt, I'd like to think the websites and videos with good reviews and everyone leaving comments saying that following the websites instructions kept the rabbit alive know what they're talking about more than random strangers on the Internet who think they know everything.
>>
>>2102468
>I read something on the internet
>because my rabbit hasn't died from bloating yet I'm obviously a qualified expert

You know you have to be 18+ to be here right? or do you need your "ass blasts inspected"?

Good lord /an/ I swear you guys are insufferable sometimes. Good luck OP please continue to keep us updated despite all these faggots pretending to know what their talking about.
>>
Baby rabbits have extraordinarily sensitive digestive systems. They also need to be simulated and fed every 4 hours. It's also best to gently tube feed them instead of getting them to suckle. Also; rabbit mothers don't hang around the nest, they just return to feed and leave again. So you probably orphaned this thing.

At least you're finally taking it to a pro, but they're going to be pissed at you, even if they don't show it.

Source: I work at a hospital, I've taken care of quite a few wild babies
>>
enjoy your dead bunny
>>
>>2101912
It's a boy.

Feed every few hours. It's not a rat obv, but I would do the same thing.

>>2102620

>buttblasted PETA members are STILL here
>>
>>2102508
Oh yes, because leaving an orphaned infant rabbit completely out in the open in known feral cat territory was totally the right thing to do.

The only other humane action OP could have taken other than what they have already done was simply to take a shovel to the animals brains as quickly as possible.

The fact that it is still alive despite everyone talking about how incredibly fragile and sensitive such creatures are is all the proof that anyone needs that OP is clearly doing something right.

And it's fucking ridiculous that everyone is going full PMS on them for doing something as simple as basic fucking research into the best possible place to take the orphan. For all they know there could be a dedicated specialist within 15 minutes driving distance who rescues and rehabilitates rabbits and squirrels and shit.

For fucks sake, when the hell did /an/ turn into a horde of cock gobbling PETA tards.
>>
>>2102642

It's clearly a girl

What you are looking at is a tail
>>
>>2102668
>For all they know there could be a dedicated specialist within 15 minutes driving distance who rescues and rehabilitates rabbits and squirrels and shit.

hi OP.

ok cool but consider this. they actually do know where the wildlife sanctuary is, and instead of simply taking the rabbit there (yes, 1hr drive, but if they really did want to give it the best survival chance it would be there by now), it's being fed cream it can't properly digest and they've even mentioned wanting to keep it permanently because not being dead yet = good quality of life.

they said it would be taken there twice now, so at this point it's clearly just a pride thing and not about the welfare of the animal at all. i hope it survives, but i'm not going to cheer someone on for keeping a wild animal as a project.
>>
>>2102724
That wasn't me(OP) but okay. They write differently than I do if you look. We found a place to take it tomorrow so we'll do that early in the morning. Thanks to all the people who understand where I'm coming from and are being useful/considerate. Here's my friend feeding her dinner. She's taking food much more readily now and a lot calmer. It's hard to tell from the pictures but she's had substantial growth since we got her, is moving around a lot more in her box and has a nice coat of fur. Barring a freak occurrence of her passing in the night for some reason, we'll be taking her to a reserve tomorrow and leaving her in more capable hands.

>>
>>2104509
>feeding it things it can't digest
Just for future reference, what should anon have fed it? Everything I'm reading from rescue sites says puppy formula for squirrels (sometimes mentions adding heavy whipping cream) or kitten formula+cream for rabbits.
>>
>>2104248
You're an idiot, this is an urban legend stay at home moms invented to prevent their kids from bringing home baby animals 24/7.

The only time this is remotely applicable is with pet hamsters. And even then it's not because the mother will reject her offspring, it's because those shitty rodents are so fucking stupid that if they have meat in front of them (dead or alive) and it smells like their owner they will think it's food and cannibalize their own young.
>>
>>2104517
He shouldn't have fed it at all. He should have taken it to a shelter or left it alone. The moment he took it upon himself to save the thing he should've got in his car and gone to a professional.
>>
>>2104534
Then what do shelters feed them? I can't imagine they have a hearty supply of squirrel milk hanging out in the freezer.
>>
>>2104536
God damn it anon, now I will forever have the mental image of a grown ass man milking squirrel nips branded into my brain for the rest of my life.
>>
>>2104517
Nothing. Anon should have taken it to a rehab.

I'm a rehabber and having people feed animals stuff they guessed about or saw on the Internet is a big problem. Yes, people have "ok" intentions, but 99% it leads to a preventable death. These little guys need constant care. Every 3 hours. 1 person without experience can't provide that care.
>>
>>2104544
>>2104536

Fox valley nutrition makes a powdered wildlife formula. There is a real squirrel and opossum formula, formulated specifically for their biology.
>>
>>2104138
i am shocked by this unexpected turn of events.

this would have been prevented if you'd actually acted on the advice you'd sought when you made this thread in the first place. what was the point in coming here otherwise? to liveblog your heroic rescue and get asspats?

you may have taken it home with good intentions, but in the end you helped kill this animal.

>>2104140

Rabbits are stupid. They can and will put their nests in horrible places, including a patch of dirt.
Mother rabbits don't lurk at the nest because that attracts predators, they only go there as little as possible, feed the babies in a few minutes and leave. They may only be at the nest for as little as 5 minutes a day.
It's perfectly possible OP assumed the baby to be abandoned when it's not, considering it's not like he watched the nest for 24 hours continuously.
