/aq/- Aquarium General

Thread replies: 330
Thread images: 59

Old Thread: >>2093858

Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

I just recently started working at my LFS, they do strictly saltwater and coral. They literally can't even keep a betta alive... It's quite funny. Anyways, I'm scheduled to dive a 5,000gal shark tank at the end of May for maintenance. It has 2 3foot black tip sharks, 3 large coral banded sharks, and a very large bat Ray. I'm nervous about the bat ray

Nice that's awsome and kinda sad they are incompetent like that, are you scuba certfied? Also don't worry about the animals they will be freaked out by you then the otherway around. Sharks tend not to be dicks in the same way triggers or even clowns that will strafe and nip you.
>>
>>2096795
Wanted to also mention I dive a 10k reef tank too. Im ordering a new BCD and full faced mask to better do my job at cleaning it.

If I may ask how much are they paying you? Make sure you are getting the right equipment.

are you using Excel?

>>
>>2096815
Their paying me 10 an hour, under the table. It's not much, but I really love this store and it's going to be a lot of fun working with them. And it's not that they are incompetent, they have all breed clownfish at some point and all actively keep at least a frag tank. I suspect their betta tank is tainted by the previous owner, who dropped it off. Then other customers dropped off their unwanted Berta's.

Any tips on getting my grass to carpet or ideas on hiding the filter/heater?
>>

That's honestly way to low, like the bare minimum servicetech goes is like $15, hell I ask for $65 on my doing own jobs.

If your doing any kind of diving you should be asking for at least $23.

Then again it sounds like your trying to help a friend so disregard all what I said in that case.

>>
>>2096858
Yea, I know these people have trouble payin the bills from time to time, and this store is their only livelihood. And even with that stress, they manage to be one of the best stores in the area. Unfortunately, even being the best store doesn't mean your making money in a market saturated with reef stores. I really don't want them to break the bank just to pay for me. I practically worked at the store, even back when I was still a customer. I would bag fish for customers and everything, spending 4 hours at a time there. The place has a great atmosphere
>>
>>2096965
Just biofilm. Naturally given off by plants, algae, and even fish in your tank. Increase surface agitation or equip a surface skimming filter and it'll go away, if it bothers you. Otherwise it doesn't really hurt.

this resolves itself in time with a few water changes and some balance in the tank. Usually clears up by the time the thing has cycled (4-6 weeks).

Hardscape, micro sword, stem plants. The sponge filter kills the whole iwagumi thing anyway so put some background plants in that bitch. H. Corymbosa grows like a fucking weed and gets bushy, or you could bunch a bunch of rotala or najas in front of them.

its a pretty small store, all like 6 of my co-workers are pretty aight people
especially our aquatics manager, she will outright refuse to sell to people if she thinks they won't take care of it
and our former inventory manager knows a hell of a lot about fish tanks
my closing manager tonight even went through and misted all the herp tanks that needed and stopped to help one of our leos with some stuck shed.

I haven't had any super awful customers, crotchety old people are about as bad as it gets

Can anyone answer me this? I'm looking to get an algae eater for my Burma/Thailand themed tank, and I've come across panda garras as the best option, unfortunately, I own a rainbow shark. I've heard some say garras are too closely related to rainbow sharks, so they will get attacked, and I've heard others say that they're 100% fine together. But does anyone here have an answer? Does anyone here keep garras with any member of the Epalzeorhynchos genus?

How easy are danios to breed? Will fry survive in a community aquarium, or will they need a breeding tank for any offspring to survive?
>>
>>2097226
Fry of any species are tough to keep alive in a community aquarium, but it all depends on what's in the community. In general you want to have a separate breeding tank.

Garras are EXTREMELY social and will swim up to everything that moves, so it really depends whether the rainbow shark strikes back or not.

Also, get one than 1 Garra, as they can fuck around with each other and let other fish be.

Danios will eat 100% of their offspring in an aquarium every time.

They may very well be breeding every day in your tank without you even noticing.

All I did was feed them live food for a few weeks and then moved a few to a 10 gallon with a bunch of Java moss for a few days before catching them and putting them back.

They're probably one of the easiest fish to breed besides mollies etc. the Java moss really helps the fry survive the first several days but you can breed them in an empty tank (which that tank now is).

Mine is fucking these things.

The only time I see them is when I rescape and that's only for a second before they dart away. Utterly pointless creatures.
>>
>>2097350
I think it's because in real life the tank is much larger than it is in a picture, so all the little details and individual views that we enjoy are kinda crammed together into one pile of tank in the picture.

I like to try for shots of individual fish or small parts of the tank that are interesting to look at.

video is good too since a lot of what we like about our tanks is the movement.

I have two african clawed frogs in one tank, and several mollies in another. The mollies are breeding like crazy, and I'm thinking this would be an easy food source for my frogs. I have red that certain fish such as ruby red minnows can cause the frogs problems while digesting them. Just trying to confirm that a Molly is not one of these fish, and make sure I don't harm my frogs in any way.
If this is better suited for amphibian general I will take it there.
>>
>>2097692
It's just in there nature, don't question it.
>>2097681
Anyway you can get the LFS to hold onto the snail until your tank is cycled? I ask because sometimes I see some fish with their tanks labeled "reserved".
>>
>>2097693
I had to go look that one up.

according to Wikipedia the problem is that goldfish and rosy red minnows contain thiaminase that can cause a vitamin B imbalance if that's all you feed for long periods of time.

The article doesn't mention any other types of fish, so presumably those are the only feeders that can become a problem.

Feeding goldfish or r.r. minnows should be fine though as long as you also feed other foods, or if you're dosing vitamins.

either way, I'd guess mollies are fine. Even then you probably want some other foods to mix it up a bit.
>>
>>2097247
they asked me what I had previous knowledge with, which for me was mostly reptiles
there is some training to do, but yeah you're encouraged to learn about what it is you're selling of course/ otherwise you just look stupid when you're bombarded with questions and you answer to all of them is "i dont know"
>>
>>2097696
Thank you. I feed them mysis shrimp a few times a week and occasionally throw in some floating pellets. There are a few guppies(and now mollies) that are sharing the tank with the frogs. Frogs definitely don't pig out on the fish, but they disappear at a fairly steady rate. Appreciate the response!
>>
>>2097566
Fuck yourself you little nigger
>>
>>2097693
Like >>2097696 said, the problem is thiaminase. Thiaminase destroys thiamin (vitamin B) and will cause a deficiency if eaten regularly. It's rather difficult to counterbalance the effect. Mollies are considered safe, though, so you're fine there. If you want to feed minnows or goldfish as a treat once a week or so, that's not enough to cause problems.
http://www.gartersnake.info/articles/2012/all-about-thiaminase.php has a list you can look through.

>>
>>2097750
I think you'll like the rotala. Even in low light with no CO2 mine would at least look decent. If you get a better light or CO2 it's one of the most beautiful plants around imo.

One observation: it seems prone to potassium deficiencies, evidenced by tiny holes in all the leaves. You might end up needing to supplement that.

It's better to pick an ecotope and use only fish and plants from that environment. You've got a lot of Asian stuff but there's also African stuff in there and just way too many plants in general. Good planted tanks tend to focus on just a small handful of plants. For a South American ecotope that might be a variety of swords and cabomba and eridea

How hard is it to maintain a 30L cube?
It wouldnt be my first tank, i got a 200L like 6 years ago wich i never had any major problems with.
The 30L cube would be for shrimps.
Do you use a co2 device for a tank that small?

Nah CO2 isn't really needed unless you want the plants to carpet.

Shrimps and dwarf crayfish will do just fine in 30L tanks.

What plants are fast growing and have the biggest root system?

I did my tank with soil that was mostly silt. It's been set up for a few months now but it's really compacted still and some of the plants I pulled up have rotting roots. I also have insane amounts of hair algae. I was thinking malaysian trumpet snails and plants with large root systems would help...

1 Coral Beauty angel
1 orange spotted blenny
1 Six line wrasse
1 Blue damsel fish.

And one corkscrew anemone and a clam.

It's not that hard keeping a reef alive compared to most aquatic plants. This is common knowledge and you're using plants that are just "lol stick in substrate and leave alone" which there's only a few. Nice try though. This is why salt water elitist turn people off the hobby
>>
>>2098354
>my plants all die when nitrates go above 10
Most reefkeepers used to keep planted tanks. Many still do.

If you want to know which one is actually more difficult, try them both. I'm not knocking planted tanks here, they often ARE extremely difficult to keep.

Reefs are just a whole different level. The sheer amount of equipment required should be some clue.

not that more difficult=better. In real life you'll rarely meet a reef keeper that's going to mock your decision to keep a planted FW tank. That's just silly. People can do what they enjoy and they shouldn't be made to feel bad about it. Especially since we're all the same hobby really.

Acclimation usually isn't necessary in that type of situation, especially if it was only in your bag for an hour or two. The slight pH/temperature shock the fish might go through is usually less of a risk than leaving it in a bag with ammonia creeping up.

Expensive lights seem to have light the travels more directly and doesn't bounce all around the tank flooding everything with light.

Use the "bubbler" to power some sponge filters and kill two birds with one stone.

Keeping a 14-16 inch fish in a 50 gallon tank isn't as cool as it sounds. The fish barely has space to turn around. Where do you live and what kind of local fish would you have access to you?

Some of it has to do with the glare of the bulbs and the quality of the reflector or lens. Better reflectors and lenses disperse light more evenly, and higher quality bulbs glare less.
A great deal of it is also the camera. HDR photography goes a long way in evening out light levels.

>>2098540

So do to me getting a new job at a LFS, I will be diving into a 5,000 gallon shark tank at the end of may. The tank includes 3 foot black tip sharks, coral banded sharks, and a large bat ray.

Does anyone have any experience with doing something like this? I think vayeate may, but is there anyone else? The more I think about it, the more real it gets. And the more I don't want either.
A. A golf ball sized chunk of flesh being ripped off my arm.
or
B. A 1.5 foot barb going through my leg.
I'm not to worried about something bad happening... as far as I've been told by the people at the shop, the sharks are pretty docile. The hardest thing it seems, is not stepping on the sting ray, since it loves to bury itself in the sand. Suggestions?

It's based on the size of the sponge. Hydro-Sponge makes ones they rate for up to 125 gallons (the Hydro-Sponge Pro V). That design will work with a powerhead, if yours happens to fit into the lift tube.

Fake plants provide fish with cover and create shaded areas for them. Live plants provide additional benefits like oxygenating the water and removing nitrogen. Fake plants certainly aren't "bad," unless you're talking about sharp plastic and fish with large, delicate fins like bettas.
I'd never use fake plants in my own tanks, but seriously, anyone who would give you shit for using them is just an asshole and not worth listening to.

It could be if the 3 ft sharks are the largest thing in the tank and everything else is juvenile and/or stunted. 12*6*9 feet works out to a little less than 5000 gallons.
>>

they'd have a hell of a problem once those black tips and the ray grew up.

most of the large shark tanks I've seen are either plastic swimming pools or stock tanks though. Usually less than 4 feet deep.

Assuming they're the kind of people who would care about that sort of thing.

>most of the large shark tanks I've seen are either plastic swimming pools or stock tanks though. Usually less than 4 feet deep.
Depending on how loosely you want to define "diving," a cylindrical tank 6 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter is also 5000 gallons, so if anything that makes it more plausible.
>>

could you imagine trying to aerate a tank with that little surface? I mean for that kind of bioload? They'd need a skimmer the size of a car.

it would be funny if it's true. I'd love to see the thing!

how is working at petco ?

is it any less shady as working at petsmart or same level of scumfuckery ?
>>
>>2098966
I think its largely dependent on your store's location/who's running the joint
Our animal care isn't too bad, we got some people that really care but our hands are tied a lot of the time. Animals are taken to the vet in a timely manner, deads are removed as quickly and discreetly as possible.
I think we got some shady stuff going on in the finances/inventory department though but only the GMs know about that shit. But I mean shit its hard to run a store when we literally have ten people working in here and most of us are part-time
>>
>>2098972
>I think we got some shady stuff going on in the finances/inventory department
if you ever find yourself running a store you'll soon discover that "shady stuff" is probably what the GM is getting paid for.

manipulating sales and inventory to meet certain deadlines is a major part of the job. Even when it's not required by the owner/shareholders, it's useful for getting your bonuses.
Made your sales bonus for this month? Start shaving off some of your sales and then enter them later to boost sales for next month.
You going to lose your cost bonus this month but someone across town already made theirs? Borrow some inventory from them for a month to pad yours.

Not saying everything in your store is aboveboard and legal, just saying managers get paid to adjust the way the numbers come in.

I'm trying to build an Above Tank Basking Area for two Red Eared Sliders. They're still babies, so I'm using a 20gal and probably some egg crate as the base.

My question is, since they're still tiny, is there any kind of substrate or grass material I can put on top of the egg crate so they don't fall through/ hurt themselves? I want the sod/ substrate to be able to last. Any thoughts on the matter or general ATBA ideas would be appreciated.

I will say this again, the sharks are going to be more freaked out then you. Unless you intentionally try to grab them or hurt them you'll be fine.

The fish that are likey to hurt you are likey triggers and large clowns, and it's always when your doing something delicate like gluing corals causing you to flinch and knock things over.

More importantly you should have a fullfaced scuba mask and no less then 2.5mm exposure suit with gloves and a boots. A BCD isnt required but any weights you wear should be covered in a cushioned pouch and on a quick release belt. Obviously you should be usin a hookah style air compressor with a decent regulator on the full faced mask.

Also you need to ask for more money. And really you need to be certified.

Lmao definitely sounds like Beamsworks. Their LEDs are never consistent. It's like the assemble lights with spare LEDs or LEDs that didn't quite pass QC or something. Another YouTuber was complaining he couldn't get two fixtures with the same color white.

My fixture has this one red LED that basically just projects a red light in the middle of my tank like a laser pointer with a low battery.

But for my purposes (low-tech tank I really don't care about that much) it's great low-heat bang:buck solution with enough lighting to grow easy plants.

Until recently my local PetSmart was miles above the local Petco. PetSmart is still just as good, but Petco seems to have gotten new staff and is catching up, which is nice.
For all the shit you guys give chain stores, on an individual basis, they're literally no different from family owned shops in terms of care. If you have employees that care and know what they're doing, it's going to be a good store, if you don't, it's going to be crap.

Hey /an/, I need your help.

I need you to answer few aquarium&fish related questions and either advice or outright say Im an idiot and shouldn't do what I want to do.

For quite some time I had thoughts in my head related to setting up an aquarium.
I just want some change in my life, and think that keeping an aquarium might just be something that might do the job.
The problem is, I dont want to go all out.
I want something small and simple.
And by simple I mean bare bones simple.

I was skimming articles on net and find myself wondering.
How much stuff can I take out of aquarium and still have it operating well?

If I use an undergravel filter and let water cascade gently from the pump onto the water surface, will it be enough to both filter and provide enough oxygen into the water?

Taking it a step further.
To not worry fishes with vacuuming the gravel, can I just set a pump to suck up water, then run it throu 15cm long&5cm diameter PCV pipe filled with gravel or other substrate acting as a filter, and then let what comes out cascade into the tank to air water?
Would bacteria stay in such 'filter', or would they be constantly washed away by the current? What If the current would be more gentle?

Are lighting and heater needed?
I guess heater isnt if I can find some fishes that feel fine in room temps.
Is lighting just for show or does it provide fishes with a stable day-night cycle? Maybe both? Will they be ok with unregulated light-dark cycles or will it stress it into quitting life? Or maybe it depends on the species?

Is it viable to make homemade fishfood instead of buying one from the store?
>>
>>2099320

How small of an aquarium is too small? Im thinking 3-4 fishes not longer than 5cm each. Is it species dependent? Probably.

Its easier to maintain balance in big tank, because anything harmful would be in more water, thus having less concentration, right?
Would it be possible to have additional big water container(unsuited for fishkeeping due to shape for example) feeding water into the fish tank in order to have more water circulating in small tank? Would that improve overall balance of the system or do the opposite?

Lastly, If I ever have fishes, what species are lower maintenance than others and more durable for amateur fuck ups?
Some that dont need a heater, are fine for cycling tank on their own, stuff like that.

Should I just stop trying or educate myself and do everything properly?
>>
>>2099320
>If I use an undergravel filter... will it be enough to both filter and provide enough oxygen into the water?
yes.
>To not worry fishes with vacuuming the gravel, can I just set a pump to suck up water, then run it throu 15cm long&5cm diameter PCV pipe filled with gravel or other substrate acting as a filter, and then let what comes out cascade into the tank to air water?
that would be fine.
>Would bacteria stay in such 'filter', or would they be constantly washed away by the current?
they stay.
>What If the current would be more gentle?
no need.
>Are lighting and heater needed?
only if you're keeping plants and tropical fish.
>I guess heater isnt if I can find some fishes that feel fine in room temps.
there's more tropical fish in stores, so heaters give you more options.
>Is lighting just for show or does it provide fishes with a stable day-night cycle?
unless you have plants it's just for show.
>Will they be ok with unregulated light-dark cycles or will it stress it into quitting life?
it's fine.
>Or maybe it depends on the species?
all species can survive whatever light cycle you give them.
>Is it viable to make homemade fishfood instead of buying one from the store?
it's more expensive.>>2099324
>Its easier to maintain balance in big tank, because anything harmful would be in more water, thus having less concentration, right?
right.
>Would it be possible to have additional big container... feeding water into the fish tank in order to have more water circulating in small tank?
yes, this is called a sump. google it. it works.
>Would that improve overall balance of the system or do the opposite?
vastly improves it.
>what species are lower maintenance and more durable?
ask the people at the fish store. Honestly you're not going to find a lot of fish that don't need a heater though.
>Should I just stop trying or educate myself and do everything properly?
absolutely not. you've shown more understanding than most of /an/ has already.

Week 10

how the fuck do i get rid of diatoms, jesus fucking christ. Now that I got rid of the nerite snail the sides of my tank go brown in like 5 days.

Really need more wattage, plants aren't going to grow past this point it seems. I will never understand how amazon swords got an "easy" reputation, they require ferts, co2/excel, and huge amounts of light. Not a beginner plant.
>>
>>2099320
>How much stuff can I take out of an aquarium and still have it operating well?
If your tank has a filter and is properly cycled, anything besides the filter.
>If I use an undergravel filter
>wanting to use a 90's deathtrap
>To not worry fishes with vacuuming the gravel
They'll get used to it, no fish is stupid enough to get near your filthy hands.
>Are lightning and heater needed
If you live in a place where temperatures fluctuate variably, yes, you do need a heater otherwise some fish may freeze/overheat to death. Lightning is optional unless you're having a planted tank.
>Is lighting just for show
Lighting causes a simulated Day/Night cycle for fish.
>Will they be ok with unregulated light-dark cycles
Absolutely, they'll be inactive if it's too dark, however.
>Is it viable to make homemade fishfood
No.
>>2099324
>How small of an aquarium is too small
Anything below 20 gallons is too small for most small fish, do not follow any rule but keep check on bioload and swimming space
>It's easier to maintain balance in a big tank
Yes.
>What species are lower maintenance than others and more durable for amateur fuck ups

No they don't kill the nitrfying bacteria. Remember that bacteria lives on the surfaces of your tank.

UV is good for clearing water and helping to keep pathogenic bacteria loads down. It won't however "clean" your water in terms of organic waste nor will it cure or treat issues like ich if your fish are already infected.
