How do animals know what food is?

When I drop grapes or pills on the floor sometimes, my dog doesn't so much as look at it. Out of curiosity I tried to get my dog to go after a dropped grape once (wasn't going to let him eat it) but he wouldn't even try. But when I drop a chip or some meat or whatever he's all over it like a tiny vacuum cleaner. What gives?

Picture unrelated, old wizard.

He probably doesn't know that it's poisonous.

Dog just doesn't like grapes.

dogs love fat. they can smell it, which is why your dog goes for chips and not for grapes. most dry dog foods are sprayed with fat to make it more appetizing to the dog. my dog won't eat any vegetables, and will occasionally take sweeter, non citrus fruits, like bananas. but he is way more excited when I give him a few spaghetti noodles or a piece of steak!

Not OP but my dog loves the veggies and citrus fruit are his favorite fruits. He's weird though. He normally prefers fresh foods but his absolute favorite is canned green beans even though he won't eat them fresh

Just like humans have preferences, so do dogs! My dog looooves canned salmon (I mix it with his kibble sometimes) but won't touch fresh or cooked. He'll do anything for a banana but walks away when offered an orange.

I chuckled.

My dog used to absolutely lose his shit when I had oranges.

Because canned things are packed with salt and other nasty shit you shouldn't give to your dog.
