I work in a preschool, and my classroom is for young 2-year-olds. Fish are boring, and while I own some stag beetles, they're too expensive (and illegal) to get for my class, plus they spend all their time under the dirt. The kids loved them when I brought them in, though.

Are hissing cockroaches a good pet for the class? They're too young to be grossed out by bugs yet.

Great pets. I prefer the wide-horn hissers (Gromphadorhina oblongonota) for sheer apparent size, but regular hissers (G. portentosa) are quite big too.

They breed easily too. Watching the babies grow up and change colors is great.

The only possible drawback for kids might be the mites (Androlaelaps schaeferi) that live on them. Don't know if they'd find them gross. They're beneficial and keep mold down. They won't transfer to any other species though and can't live off the roaches.

Pic related were the two adults I started with. My colony is now about 30 strong.

Here's mine.

I was going to make a thread but thought i would ask here first. How well do you think anoles and hissers would co-exist? They have the same temp and humidity requirements and in theory im hoping the anoles would fill the "arboreal" niche while the roaches stay on the ground, although they like to climb too. Anyone have any experience with mixing the two? Or any kind of species that can cohabitat with hissers?

I have no experience with anoles but have the right set up for them, except having the right light for my hood. Im trying to create a vivarium, i already have some plants growing and the roaches dont eat them.

tl;dr can anoles or any other kind of pet coexist with hissing cockroaches?
>>
>>2077582
Quickest way I can think of is by looking at the legs. The front pair is always significantly shorter than the rear legs. The head is also generally tucked underneath the body.
>>
>>2077591
I dunno, but It'd be worth trying I suppose. The anole would probably eat the smallest nymphs. I'd just be worried that the presence of the big adults would stress the lizard out, especially in a smaller setup. Also, I wouldn't be shocked if the hissers got hungry and decided to nibble on the anole's tail or toes. If I had the inclination to mix roaches with a lizard, I'd go for something really small and burrowing, something like Little Kenyan roaches.

Yeah those were my concerns too. My roaches are pretty defensive, but i dont know if thats just between one another of the same species and gender. I wouldnt care about nymphs getting eaten but it would bum me out to see any lizards getting chewed on.The dimensions of the tank is about 32×20×12, its supposed to be a 50 gallon fish tank but i converted it. Currently have 7 males, no females. I havent seen too many resources online about mixing anoles and hissers so i probably wont try unless i see or hear a successful attempt from someone. I just figure since anoles come from florida and hissers are illegal there, that they could possibly live together but of course thats maybe wishful thinking on my part. Thanks for your input.
>>
Some of these roaches are beautiful. Are there any beautiful roaches common in the pet trade that are easy to care for? Most of the ones I see (hissers, widehorns) are just big and brown.

Also, can you handle them? Do they bite? I can mind them crawling on my but the moment something starts nibbling is when I can't handle it.

>>
>>2077875

This site is the best ive found for pet roaches. Its got a lot of variety and the guy goes around the world collecting them and breeding them.

Also im pretty sure most roaches dont bite. Hissers certaintly dont but sometimes their leg spikes can poke you but it isnt exactly painful and wont cause you any harm. Most roaches feed on decaying matter so its very unlikely that one would want to bite or eat living tissue of any kind.
>>
>>2077889
How are hissers illegal in California? I have some and the pet store down the street from me sells them as pets and feeders as well. They wouldnt become invasive if they escaped either. Places like florida they are illegal due to the climate being close to their natural conditions. Where are you getting that info from?
>>
>>2077582
They usually have a distinctive pronotum (head plate), and the head is as if it was tucked in there, not being visible from above (usually).

I could see that working. As long as you keep your roach numbers the same and get maybe 2 anoles at most. If your plants are tall, the lizards will stay up there and not be messed with by the roaches.
>>
>>2078129
Kyle is the best. I met him back in like 2012 and he's such an all around great guy. I've bought from, sold to, exchanged species with him countless times. He primarily deals in roaches but really he loves all bugs and all animals. Fuck, he's ever started collecting plants. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to get into roaches.

Also, never heard of any CA laws. I mail roaches there all the time and never had anyone mention any.

>>2077928
He very rarely does anything international, unless it's pinned specimens, but there are tons of European dealers out there, certainly more than in the US.
>>
>>2078376
Yeah i was thinking 2 at the most, either 2 females or male and female, depending on how often they mate. I would secure some grapewood around the top of my tank so they would have a safe place above if they needed it. Roaches usually like staying under or behind things and as i said the roaches only fight for territory with members of the same species and gender (from what i read anyway) i dont know if either the anoles or roaches would percieve eachother as a threat or whatever though. There are zero resources online that have any say on the topic.

Just got 5 Madagascar hissing roaches today. Also had a baby one along with them but i fear it crawled out when i was turned around with the terrarium open. I hope to see the juvenile walking around tonight since they're nocturnal. Might set an apple slice in a bowl to attempt to coax it out from behind the wardrobe i think its at.

I was all excited to feed the baby too.

>>
>>2082467
Depends on the ones you want. Pick a species, and look up care sheets on them. And if you intend to let them make babies make sure you have a secure habitat for them or else the babies will escape without much trouble.

Pest species can spread disease and cause respiratory problems if you just let them take over your house. Captive roaches are harmless unless you keep them in shitty conditions.
>>
>>2082467
Hissing roaches are the most reasonable to keep as pets since they live a long time and reproduce slowly. They eat literally anything. I mainly give mine citrus slices, any leftover vegetables and fruits, oats and grainless cat food. Give them some vertical slabs of cork bark and coconut fiber substrate.10 adults with some juveniles could fit in a 5 gallon comfortably.

One time I tried to give my tarantula a roach to eat as roaches are better for you and less fatty than crickets. She walked over slowly, gently picked it up with her mouth parts, then gently sat it down and let it crawl away. When I tried to get it out of the cage, the tarantula tried to bite me. I figured that my tarantula wanted a pet for herself.

A few days later I found a piece of to roach's carapace. I'm guessing she got tired of her pet.

A roach thread!

Bookmarked.

I am keeping a little German one that wandered in from the cold about 7 weeks ago.

Later I will share a pic. But first this nice picture someone here made me.

I call him Gregor the Roach.

He's cheerful company. I think I may be feeding him too much; he has gotten particular, and I think he was sick a week ago. He has a nice jungle gym I made him with toothpicks, string and cardboard to give his 'brains' little navigation puzzles to solve and strengthen his limbs. This way when I release him next month when it is warm, he will have better reflexes and limb elasticity, at least at the joints. Its better than running circles all day.

I just hope he makes it. I will be very sad if he expires in captivity. But its too cold now. They apparently only live about 6-9 months.

I also hope I am not conditioning him to lose his fear of big animals. He's already way to comfortable strutting around in the light.

Its said they have personalities. He is a cheerful, spunky little guy.

I've been worried about his health off and on over the last week, any change in behavior. Maybe he is just temperamental.

I try to give him a variety of foods. Over the last week-

>How about some mashed potatos?
"Nah".
>Maple syrup?

>Cheese? Butter? Noodle?

>Okay, how about some sausage?

No, but it could be cabin fever.

He's been good company. For example, by comparison, he has never asked any snarky questions about autism just to attack someone online for sharing a roach story in a roach thread, talking about an animal on an animal board..

Between vermin and people as company, I find the vermin is winning.

I mention it as future reference for anyone wondering why someone might keep a roach. And yet someone will undoubtedly mention it again.

My local pet store (that used to have awesome owners that actually knew how to take care of their animals) had some hissing cockroaches for about two months before they found out they were illegal. I don't know if maybe they were just illegal to ship into CA, and they couldn't keep getting them from the guy, or if it was just the breed, or whatever, but they told me that they were supposedly illegal because they could breed and survive if they escaped and become an invasive species.

So I don't know. It was a few years ago and they could have gotten in trouble if they didn't get rid of them.

I posted the spider eating and the OP. Roaches are food and friends. They're a huge group of animals with tons of diversity. Literally only German, American and a couple other roach species are disease carrying pests. The rest are innocuous. No worse than a butterfly.
>>
>>2088847
>disease carrying pests

Im always confused by what that means. All animals carry germs.

I assume it means they are more likely to contact humans, but then any animal can. Humans get diseases from humans, but no one calls us disease carrying apes.

(well,not in public anyways)

For example, dogs and pigs are considered unclean in Islam; shellfish and rabbits also in Judaism.

Most cats carry toxoplasmosis. And dongs, well, I guess not much explanation is needed.

Likewise, I find 'pest' is flexible too. No one would think of muscovy ducks as a pest generally, and yet they are considered such by the government agency that deals with these things.

So I suppose pest means that they can procreate to disturbing numbers and have adverse effects as such on human settlement. Not so much as a few, but many.

I imagine most here have seen the rat and other rodent problems in India. So I guess pest refers more to their capacity for disruption than what any particular animal in it does individually.

Ive known many animals to be both pest and friend, like birds at the park and such.

Seagulls and pigeons are a nuisance here, but people dote on them nonetheless.

House centipedes are another. Many consider them a pest, but I am always grateful they are around, as they eat other potential pests without breeding such numbers as spiders.

A few spiders are great; an egg sac hatching can be a domestic catastrophe. Harmless often, but nuisances nonetheless.

Any generalist species has potential to be a pest. Most cockroaches aren't generalist enough to become cosmopolitan and procreate in houses. American, German, Oriental, Turkestan, Surinam and a few others have pest potential. Many tropical roaches almost always need to burrow and eat decomposed wood (termites and roaches are related) to thrive, which you'll never find indoors.

American and German cockroaches can multiply indoors in enough numbers to create ridiculous amounts of frass which is a powerful allergen. They're great vectors for Salmonella, cholera and several other pathogens. Turkestan, Oriental and Surinam roaches aren't particularly house invasive, but they can infest greenhouses, yards and house plants.

>I assume it means they are more likely to contact humans, but then any animal can. Humans get diseases from humans, but no one calls us disease carrying apes.

I mean, if you got a bunch of psychotic lepers living, shitting and tracking feces and leprosy on to your food in your walls, then you could call them disease carrying apes.

>So I suppose pest means that they can procreate to disturbing numbers and have adverse effects as such on human settlement. Not so much as a few, but many.

So, yeah, I'd say pests are species that compete with us for livable space and resources. Personally, I wouldn't want American roaches literally shitting up my living space. Nor would I want to culture them because of their infestation capability. If I drop a Surinam roach in my room or a hisser runs away, I don't care, because I know they'll die within a day or two.

Just as a note, cockroaches are an entire order of animals. There's as much diversity within Blattodea as in Carnivora (cats, dogs, hyenas, seals, bears, ferrets).

I see. I guess it has different factors, like transmission vectors and the likelihood the animal will actually carry the germ.

For example, an animal may be as germy as loose change, but if it doesnt carry anything that harms humans, no one cares.

LIkewise, birds may crap plague on your car all day, but if it doesnt come in contact with food, you might never know.

Personally, I think animals have to be at plague numbers to be much of a disease issue. Roaches are everywhere, but you never hear of just a few causing an outbreak.

By contrast, if you have a thousand roaches pooping everywhere, and assuming the poop is a good culture for a particular contagion, then I guess the odds are worse for transmission.

My little German roach is quite solitary (which is how I had the heart to take him in as friend and not pest).

His habitat is sterilized once a week, as much for him as me.

Try feeding your friend raw vegetables and fruit. That might be more appealing to him than meat.
>>
>>2089587

I have tried raw potato, crushed kidney bean (they have somewhat frail jaws) some cooked carrot and crushed pea. I may have offered a crushed bit of strawberry. He never showed interest in any of them.

For German roaches, I read they prefer starches and meat. But I keep trying.

It may be a perceptual error on my part. He does eat, but in strange cycles I haven't figured out. There is the possibility, perhaps even the likelihood, that I am seeing normal eating behavior and misinterpreting it from unmitigated laymans ignorance of the animals normal functions.

It may be a natural reaction to being surfeited with every type of food constantly. If I was offered a Thanksgiving banquet 7 days a week, a doting observer may think me ill for not ravishing every meal also. What I look for is nibbling. Instead, I see two day fasts, and then gorging. I also look for droppings and activity levels. Ambient light may also be a problematic factor, as I suspect his day/night cycles are scrambled by my activity. I dont get alarmed by the lethargy of captivity, but I do get worried when it begins to appear as protracted torpor, and I dont think he has any molts left. Recently, his activity has been more normal.

So I have tried them, but I want to thank you for your suggestion and the kind advice, I do appreciate very much. I too thought something more basic and natural would be preferred, but it doesnt seem to be the case.

I am hesitant to offer him jam. I had two previous visitors in previous years that expired after eating jam, and it made me suspect that some additive was in the food, perhaps as anti-egg agent, that was toxic to the insects. I can't prove it, but it did seem suspicious. He has already shown noticeable aversion to tomato. I also do not allow chocolate or anything with caffeine, or excessive salt or acidity, and water is left out to de-chlorinate before delivering for consumption into his habitat...

Again, I appreciate your thoughtful suggestion. I should've indicated that my previous list was not complete.

Have a great weekend, and thank you for your advice. I will continue to make the effort of affording more chances with fresh fruit and vegetables of new kinds with your suggestion in mind. Perhaps I just haven't found the type that appeals to him. Banana may get better reaction. Portions have to be large enough that he can find them easily while they are still fresh, but small enough not to create severe habitat pollution as they sour and ferment.

I really enjoy your roach stories, anon. Glad to hear Gregor is doing fine. I shared some of your prior posts with my dad and he enjoyed them.

You have a natural talent for observating and describing, have you thought about becoming an entomologist?

Sure. They don't look like much, but they have some interesting behaviors. Arguably the best feeder roach, so expect to have a lot in several months.

If you have nothing to feed roaches to, consider a slower reproducing species like Death's Head (Blaberus craniifer) roaches. They have a demon's face on their pronotum and the black wing strain looks hardcore.

Because I tend to make lengthy posts and large blocks of text without double spacing are harder to scan. It's something you will learn in college when you try to submit a paper. It's just for visual comfort, especially when everyone is looking at it in different sizes and margins.

I'd ask why people spend this much effort griping about typography, posting again, again and again. And I will as soon as I can summon the crap to give about it.

Thank you very much! Actually, I was going to study marine biology at one point; doting on insect visitors is just something I developed over time living in the city where I dont get as many chances to appreciate animal life.

Gregor seems to really enjoy his new "jungle gym". It has many levels, many hidey-holes, things to climb including some tiny ropes, little tunnels, and navigation puzzles to solve.

Have a great day.

From this point onward, it is impossible to regard your frustration over post spacing as anything but bored pleas for attention by a troll.

Or maybe I am being harsh. Maybe you are just angsty generally and English isn't your first language.

I post the same way anon. I think it's two-fold. First, there's the separation of ideas so readers can better understand when a point is started and ended. second, the reply box is MUCH smaller than the screen the actual type gets posted to.

With these two aspects, the blocks that seem like a complete paragraph in the little reply box will string out into just a few lines of text on the board.

I still think it looks better, anyway.

Not that guy, but I think it's easier to read more properly formatted paragraphs on here, because it's easier for me to read quickly that way. Takes more time to read evenly spaced out snippets for whatever reason. Not an annoyance though.

I found a wood roach nymph while working in the garden today. No pictures, unfortunately, so you'll have to take my word for it.
