Depends on the animal. I would venture to say most really only understand instinctual fear and the ability to nurture their young with "love", but domestic animals that have been specifically bred over thousands of years to have emotions and love us are an exception. Obviously, not knowing English is a problem, so it's not like they're thinking "Oh, God, I love Gerald so much, he's such a kind owner." so they're about as emotional as they can be while missing a few brain layers and not really having a language.
