My brother's pet fox was loving and playful, but utterly uncontrollable. He wasn't spending enough time with her either, with his studies mounting. She was escaping every other day and beginning to harass the neighbors livestock.
Dad shot her. I had to retrieve her body, with her beautiful eyes wide open and a weird, thick, blood/brain mixture coming out of her ear.

Negligent father killed my dog on my eleventh birthday. I go out for a bike ride. See father speeding down road with my brother and sister both in the car as well. Weird, I thought. Get home. Mom tells me dog had been hit by a car and father was taking it to vet.
Finally father and siblings return home and I hear the story. Father had taken dog out for a walk, no leash. He knew our dog was nowhere near trained enough to stay close without leash. He takes dog near busy road. Dog of course runs out in to traffic. He killed my dog. He never claimed responsibility. Never apologized for what he did.

My dad shot one pet cat and a couple of our rabbits, but only when they were very clearly dying and getting them to a vet would have prolonged their suffering by hours. He doesn't like doing it, but he does it properly (appropriate firearm, pet wrapped in a towel and properly immobilised) and it never really bothered me even as a child. He's done the same for a few wild animals and at least one random cat that had been hit by a car and was clearly not going to survive.

My dad didn't exactly kill the dog, but he prolonged his suffering.
Dad took our 12 year old maltese to a boarder/vet while we visited my grandparents. When he picked up the dog, they said they'd given him a checkup and he had a heart murmur and a collapsed lung and his organs were slowly failing. Dad instead asked for pills for the heart murmur and took the dog home with us on an eleven-hour car ride to Colorado. Didn't tell us anything was wrong. Just gave me the pills and said "give him one of these once a day inside a bit of hot dog".
Mom took the dog to a vet a month later and called me crying because none of us realized he was suffering that badly. She asked if I wanted her to bring him home so the rest of us could say goodbye.
Of course I wanted to say goodbye. But it wasn't fair to him to make him hurt that badly any longer. I was so angry at myself for not realizing how bad it was and I'm still so angry at my dad for making my dog suffer for so long. I was young, and I didn't know any better, but he did.

I accidentally killed my sister's bunny when I was like 10.
We lived out in the country and we had a really sweet lab, but she had skin issues and holy god did she smell bad, so she mostly stayed outside on the second story back porch in her own little heated and cooled dog house. My dad was a carpenter so she basically had a little mini mansion with air flow, windows and a doggie door. The rabbit hutch was also on the deck.
Anyway it was my chore to clear all the poop off the back deck. We had gotten back from a week long trip and the girl we asked to watch our animals just left all the poop on the deck.
It was winter and cold as shit, so I wanted to clear it fast. I threw the hose up to the deck and power blasted all the turds off the deck. I also blasted the poop from under the rabbit hutch. I thought I was doing my sister a favor.
I didn't think about the water splashing up through the grate in the bottom of the cage and soaking the rabbit. I was focused on blasting the poo.
He got pneumonia and died in her arms. She hated me for years. We are tight now, but it still feels bad man and I know she hasn't forgiven me in her heart of hearts. I let her basically steal my dog though, so I guess that makes up for it.

So when my dogs comes back the next day with gun pellet in his fucking neck and now blind in one eye, I put two and two together.

She also killed a while litter of kittens and the mother by ODing them on flea killer and dewormer. Kittens were just a couple weeks old and I was attached after she made me meticulously wash them with Dawn and pick off the millions of fleas.

I'd been volunteering at a shelter cleaning out cat cages. One of the cages had a cat that was giving birth to stillborns. they tried to remove any bodies that were in the cage before I cleaned it, but they missed one.
When I told my mom about it she started breaking down and told me about some psychopath that used to live next door when she was a child. She had just gotten a bunch of kittens (didn't mentions how she came by them. I assume her cat gave birth). She put them in a little baby carriage and walked them around outside.
Then her crazy neighbor opened the door, pointed at the carriage, and screamed "GET THEM!" . His dog leaped out of the house, pushed the carriage over, and ripped the kittens apart in front of her.
She told me that he also once hanged one of their cats from the garage door.

While I don't hate them, I do think it is negligent. I've had as many as 8 different kinds of pets at once (dog, cat, 3 snakes, 2 geckos, dragon, 2 sugar gliders, 3 gerbils, saltwater aquarium, tortoise) ... let me tell you, with that many pets, it is SO easy to miss when one is sick or not feeling well. You simply can't devote any real attention to any of them. It's just wrong. I'm down to 5 different kinds of animals, and it's still way too many. 3 is probably a safe upper limit. I can keep them alive, but not give them enough attention to spot changes in behavior/health unless it's obvious.

I had a 55 gallon tropical aquarium as a kid. Nothing in there thats too delicate and my fish generally lived pretty long.
