By far my favourite insects (and favourite animal overall). They're like elegant alien warriors. I can only find green and brown kinds where I live but there are so many incredible varieties. Post pics if you have them.

You gotta fuck up for that to happen. Just feed the female well and give it something right before you let the male jump on and it's safe.

Which mantis species would I be able to keep in a dorm? I have experience with invertebrates and would like something interesting but also pretty small.

Ghosts are super easy, frequently bred and can be kept in groups.
Other good choices are some Sphodromantis, Hierodula, Tenodera or Miomantis species.

I tried to keep a wild one earlier this year, but it had a bad molt and died. What can cause this?

Wrong humidity, stress during molt, not enough space below the mantis, not fed enough, losing grip and falling down, taking too long. There can be many reasons.
