So I got a new 6 years old cat from the shelter, in a new apartment where no other animal resides. The cat has apparently not had too good a life: stray cat, had worms, bad teeth, a ripped eye, dehydrated, you get the picture. Anyway the shelter made kitty all better and did the whole medical shebang.
I picked him up and had him stay in the bathroom to monitor his behavior since it's the only closed room I have that's not fully carpeted. He's been doing fine, lets me get near and pet him (he enjoys that quite a bit, ramming into me pretty hard for more petting) and has been eating his food, using the litter properly and all that. He was on meds until today because of infections and still on wet food for another 2 days because of the teeth problems.
There's one thing though, I now leave the door open for him to explore the apartment when I'm there, but he will not come out, and stays in his carrier in the bathroom the whole time. I've taken him out of the bathroom to sit on me, but when he gets off after a while, he runs right back to the bathroom. Additionally, he hisses at me every single time I go check on him, but doesn't seem aggressive out of this, and lets me pet him just the same as usual along with the headbutting. He'll even sometimes be doing both the hissing while trying to be petted harder.
What could be causing this? How can I make him come out of the bathroom and not be so scared of everything including myself? I've had cats before and I'm really confused on this one. Have a picture of the guy for your troubles.

Pierced cornea - What are the odds?
I have a rather heartbreaking situation here. I'm an owner of a soon to be 16 year old female cat (her 16th birthday will be Dec. 8th). She's blind, from both eyes. Has been for the past 2 years now. The reason why I didn't put her to sleep back then is that she wasn't in any pain when the blindness occurred, and she adapted to the situation very well. Since we're not living in a city, she's even been able to continue to go outdoors, only this time under my strict, personal supervision. When she walks around the yard, I've been looking after her to see to it that she doesn't move too far, or get into any sort of trouble.
Only last week, something bad ultimately happened. She somehow managed to poke her left eye into something sharp, and the eye was pierced. The wound is a small dot in the cornea, under the lower eyelid, when my veterinarian found it and showed it to me. It leaks clear ocular fluid from time to time, and before our prompt vet visit, it was extremely painful for her.
The vet had her on painkillers, eyedrops and antibiotics for now. The pain has subsided since, thanks to the drugs. She pretty much can't feel the eye anymore, altough some fluid leaks still occur and she can feel that something's coming out. The vet informed me that removing the eye surgically would've been our best option, but is no longer recommended for my cat due to her high age of nearly 16 years.

She's now on a 2 months grace period. The vet informed me that if during this time the injured eye does not get better, if it continues to be painful after the meds are dropped, the vet will have no choice but to recommend putting my little miss to sleep. Altough it breaks my heart to even think about it, I ultimately agreed to this deal, since the surgery, which is not even recommended anymore, would be costly and at most would only offer her maybe few more years, before her age would catch up with her anyway. And at this point she's fully blind anyway, so there's no guarantee that I could ensure a good quality of life. Not if her pains can't be controlled/eliminated.
So basically, I'd like to ask, given these circumstances, what are her odds? What are the chances that the hole in her eye would heal up and she'd stop hurting? If things go the way they're predicted, she'll have one more Christmas with us, and that's it. Then it's permanent nap time for her. Is this truly Game Over for her?

Regarding impending euthanasia, you may want to ask for a second opinion. Surgery on a 16-year-old cat is certainly risky, but if the alternative is The Big Sleep, I'm surprised to hear your vet isn't at least willing to try. I've known both blind cats and animals with amputated eyes or even limbs that still had a fine quality of life, but this would be dependent on her overall health.
I really have no idea re: probabilities of healing. Best you can do is see how it goes. Sorry, man. 16 years isn't a bad run at all, especially for what sounds like an at least partially-outdoor cat. It's a tough call to make... but if I was in your shoes I'd probably say goodbye too.

Thanks. She's been a good companion, and we've really bonded. I started taking care of her when she was just 3 weeks old, and she was fully given to me at week 10. We've been inseparable since.
She's been very much the outdoors type all her life, and an active hunter all the way up to going blind. I've been taking very good care of her, medical stuff and everything, so it didn't surprise me that she made it all this way. I was frankly hoping she'd make it to 20. I was ready and willing to put in the work.
A second opinion is probably a no-go, since our vet is the only one within a 100 mile radius. We had another guy, but he retired 2 years ago, and he didn't have the equipment to perform eye examinations anyway.
I guess I'll just concentrate on making her remaining time here as tolerable as possible, dedicate this Christmas to her. But Goddamn this sucks. I've been crying in secret, hoping for a miracle.

Sounds like he's still just pretty freaked out and doesn't know what to do with himself. I've interacted with cats at my shelter that solicit human contact and obviously are not aggressive but still just hiss or growl randomly. It's kinda like they can't decide whether to be frightened of their environment or happy to get attention. It sounds like you're making progress, though, which is good.
Give him time, be patient, go slow, keep doing what you're doing. He's probably had a lot of trauma and it's turned him into a slow adjuster (and some cats are just naturally less adaptable, who knows). I've known cats that took weeks or months to really settle into a new environment but were fine after that. I'm sure the vocalizing is annoying but just remember it's a result of what he's gone through and not because something is wrong with you or him.
Playing talk radio or classical music quietly at night may help keep him quieter. Many animals find it comforting. Good luck anon.

It could, I've caught wild rabbits that way (added string to trigger the fall), but it is not likely to work. They can sense the box mover before it falls, in the case of using a string they can see the string move before you can pull the stick away and get the box to fall. And wild animals are very careful about treading cautiously, and often wont knock the stick over themselves. On top of that, you are hoping a cat will walk into a weird thing that is obviously small and closed off, and then not being able to turn around and run out if they did sense the trap being triggered.
I'd recommend a live trap. They are maybe $30 but you can also call up vets, rescues, shelters, TNR organizations, animal control etc if they will let you borrow one for free. Live traps are easy to decorate to look natural, are much longer so they can't easily get out once the trap is triggered, and it's a lot harder for them to get out too. The trap has a very sensitive pressure plate that cats usually have to step on to continue through the trap.
I would say to put this trap in a quiet place where you see the kittens often, or near where they are. If possible make sure the trap isn't out in the open, because wild cats don't like to wander where there isn't a lot of places to run and hide to. Cover the trap with leaves and twigs to make it look like part of everything else. The bait should be some sort of cat food, and places all the way at the very end of the trap or right after the pressure plate on the trap. Some cats will be too skittish to walk all the way to the end of the trap. It is very important to check the trap every single day, and if you can't check the trap daily, either bring it back home or trigger it to make sure animals can't get in on the days where you know you won't be able to check them for the next day or however long it will be.

If you catch something unsavory, call Animal Control and they will handle it for you. If you explain the situation they may just release the animal back into your neighborhood. Sometimes they are required to take it elsewhere or euthanize it, in which case they may have to take the trap. Just make sure you write your name on it and explain you want it back because ACO can be air-headed. In the case they don't want to come (Sometimes ACO sucks) then I'd suggest throwing a tarp over the trap (this works well for skunks too), transport it to where ever you want the animal to be, and carefully lift a small portion of the tarp just enough to open the door. Just make sure the door is pointing where you want the animal to run, and not towards you. You may want to where some thick work gloves.
As for the kittens themselves, how old are they? Do you know what you are going to do with them? If they are under 8 weeks, they *may* be able to be rehabilitated into something that resembles a domestic animal, but it is slim for them to become cuddly kittens if they are older and true ferals (meaning they were born outside and have no human contact besides seeing them). Many shelters and rescues do not take in feral cats, so if I were you I would call them before trapping them to see if they will take the kittens. If you wanted to keep them or adopt them out yourself, just keep in mind that ferals are not affectionate, they are very territorial and may not do well with other animals or cats, they would need to be indoor-only because they may never come back inside once let out. and are much more affected by strangers and noises. Feral cats sometimes eliminate outside of the litter box, may attack people for 'seemingly' no reason, can be very destructive in the house, and on top of that they sometimes will not even want to be touched by the end of the day. Just potential challenges if you did want to re-home them.

If you still want to catch the cats, but no one will take them, I would suggest to do a TNR (in fact I highly recommend fixing them before you try to re-home them also; not only is getting vetted a huge plus for people looking to buy cats, but it's also good to make sure they have been fixed and first round of shots because most people will not do this, and then more cats are created or the cats get fatally ill). See if there is a TNR in your area that will accept your cats; TNRs do have limits on what they can do, and will limit their reach to specific towns and counties. Sometimes TNRs will only do neuters, and not spays, and sometimes it will not be free but only low-cost. ONLY use TNR if you want the cats to be returned to the wild. Many people abuse TNR to fix their pet cats, and then the groups don't have the time or money to get to good Samaritans actually trying to fix ferals to keep population down and keep more animals from suffering. TNR groups will also cut or notch the ears of cats, tattoo them, and will sometimes release the animal themselves in a feral friendly area, so you may be taking a big gamble to use TNR on cats you want to keep.
If you want to keep the cats, or there are no TNR services near you, your other option is to get the animals vetted yourself. Vets will often not do free spays and neuters, and usually not low cost, either. They will get all of their shots and get fixed at the vet, however. Some organizations will do low cost or maybe even free fixing of cats, but restrictions may apply, like proof of how much money you make in a year or proof of some kind of welfare or disability assistance. Again, you'd have to do your own research to find out more.
Now lets say you can't do any of the above, I would honestly say euthanasia is the kindest option. You wouldn't believe the condition I've seen some feral cats live in, they are fucking horrendous. At least with euthanasia they will die quickly and quietly.
Is food grade diatomaceous earth the best option if fleas have set into your carpets aside from fumigators/new carpets? I've tried tablets for my little one previously and while they kept them off her for a while, it doesn't really have the desired effect when they are all in the carpets.

I've pretty much done everything but tear the carpets out and fumigate. I've covered everywhere in flea power, different collars and checked they didn't do harm to her, some spray that worked for a while. Thank you for the thorough response. I called the city TNR and got some traps. Caught one of the two on Monday but have not seen the other since then. The one we caught is a sweetheart, about 8 weeks old, and has let us bathe, de-flea, pet, and hold her. I taught her to use a box and today she's figured out how to come when called. Taking her to the vet for shots and checkup tomorrow.

Two questions. First of all, does anyone have any idea what breeds my cat may be? I know she's not purebred or anything, but I would really like to know what she might be. This is relevant because I'm allergic to cats, and we adopted her in the hopes that I wouldn't react to her. Over the past two days though it's become unbearable for me to be around her.
My sister told me she might be descended from a Russian Blue, which is a breed that tends to cause less severe allergic reactions, but she's only a few months old and already I can't spend that much time around her.
Now for the other problem. This is the first time I've ever owned a pet more intelligent than a fish. We originally got the pet because I wanted one (I wanted a dog, but my parents irrationally fear dogs and I can't afford to move out yet). However, I've found that my cat doesn't really want to give me company. Also she is biting and scratching a lot - not with the intent to cause harm, but unless she's tired I can't touch her without her thinking my fingers are a toy.
She just doesn't seem to respond at all when I call her (she's not deaf) and doesn't really seem to care about me unless I'm playing with her with a fishing pole toy. I originally wanted a pet because I wanted the experience of having a living thing that wasn't my parents actually care about me, but I just am not finding that here. Am I missing something, or is this just how cats are?

In some weird way I've found myself liking her. However, it's frustrating to not have that feeling returned at all. It feels like she doesn't care about me in the least. She seems to like my dad, but she doesn't seem to care about me at all.
This is pretty much the opposite of what I wanted in a pet. I was led to believe that a pet would give me the experience of another living thing actually desiring my presence... but I just haven't felt that at all. Unfortunately, it's difficult to say whether her behaviour is just her personality or if it's because she's young. Younger cats are much more energetic and independent, and yes, they can bite and scratch a lot in play. She may settle down with age and become more affectionate and cuddly, but she may remain aloof. It's difficult to say- I'm afraid this is no good coming so late, but /an/ usually recommends adopting an adult cat if you want to know their personality, and particularly looking at a cat that's at least a few years old if you want a snuggly lap-cat. Hopefully she will settle down though, it's normal for cats to do so over the first couple of years of their life.

you're just looking at this whole thing wrong. the goal isn't to get her to "come to you," it's for her to become comfortable with you and make friends with her no matter what that actually means. some cats will be happy on your lap, some will be happy at your feet, some will be happy just to be in the same room. the biggest thing is that you have to know the protocol. some people get easy cats who they can treat however they feel like and the cat's very forgiving, some people get more classically feline cats (you have one, i have one as well) which are more reserved and flighty. it's just how it is, there is a big variance in feline personality as with in humans.
there's no magic bullet, but her personality can and will change dramatically over the course of her life. girl cats in particular tend to be a little more standoffish than males, but i sincerely believe it's possible to create a relationship with any cat with enough effort. unlike dogs, however, it's all about approaching the cat on its own terms and making at least a token effort to understand their psychology and how they're processing everything it is experiencing.
you need to start reading about cats instead of asking shit on 4chan because if you don't start fostering your own passion for learning about and interacting with your cat, it's never going to work out.

A friend had a cat that had babies and keeps finding conflicting info. Babies are 5 weeks now and most of them are eating food. I know for a fact that 5 weeks is too soon to be taken from mom and dont want her to do it because she got bad info
I live with my parents, and they recently adopted a kitten we found in the backyard. We have a huge feral population, but this kitten was friendly.
The kitten's sweet, but is not reacting to any attempts to train. She'll jump up on the table, we'll say "no" and put her down, this goes on and on until we close her in a bedroom. She bites our hands, we move our hands away, she goes for them again even if we try to distract her with a toy. She reaches into the rabbit's pen and pulls his hay, poop, and whatever fresh foods we put in out. Attacks my curtains, scratches the furniture (despite us having, no joke, 8+ scratching pads and posts).
I keep trying to gently dissuade her from doing these things, and I've been consistent, but she doesn't seem to make any progress at all and is driving me fucking batshit. I have a cat of my own, and these methods worked well on her. Is there a particular method that works better on kittens? I've never had a cat this young before. Got her at 10 weeks, she's almost 16 weeks now.

Try stopping her BEFORE she does these actions (which is going to require damn near constant surveillance of her).
If you see her starting to pose to jump on the table, put your hand in front of her face and say NO. Repeat until she finds something else to do. Pretty much do that with everything else combined with a lot of play. My cat goes crazy for rolled up paper balls, and hates the squirt bottle, which is also good if you can't get to the cat on time. If the cat starts to walk over to furniture, calmly walk over to her and pick her up and place her on a scratching pad. If she uses any of the scratchers, love on her or give her treats. Could also try a cardboard scratcher.

he pitches a fit just trimming his nails, its a 2 person job. we cant take him into a groomer because hes too old to sedate him, and the vet gave us pills but they weren't effective.

Common in older and/or overweight cats, since they often become too painful or fat to reach all the way around and groom their rear ends. It's not dangerous or harmful to him, but regular brushing would also help with that.

Also, read on the box if there's a weight limit. Usually smaller cat trees have a more substantial weight limit.

I sleep with my cat. Some nights, he'll back up into my face and almost sit on it. He never does that when I'm awake. He knows he can touch me and I'll wake up and open up the covers for him to get under. It's really annoying because it's a very light touch and it startles me awake and as a reaction I push him roughly away. Is he just being a jerk?
