How do I stop being a mean person? For years now, I have had moments where I think "oh shit" and I start to remember all the times I was rude to others, very mean.
I am far more self aware now, so I don't have those "oh shit" moments anymore, because I basically realize consciously, admittedly, that I am a mean person. So there is no need for sudden epiphanies anymore. I admit and accept who I am, with no hesitation.
But, I don't want to be like this. How do I change?

Examples
This isn't so difficult.. you are about to say something mean and you realize you are. Then you force yourself to say something nice (you'll cringe and it feels like you are lying).
Eventually you get used to it, and people will start to like you more so you get something out of it in return.
