Learn from the mistakes you will make. You will almost certainly get rejected. Just remember everyone gets rejected, so treat it as a learning experience and move on.

So how do I not get rejected?

So when I approach a girl I like I gauge their interest in me. I ask myself, "If I smile, is she smiling back?"""Does she take a step back if I approach?" "What's her body language saying?"
Stay positive and fun but strong and confident. Let it be clear that you want a date out of her. Practice in the mirror. Rehearse it to yourself or in your head. Hear yourself and practice what you are going to say out loud and imagine her response (both good or bad outcome) and then think about what you are going to say based on that response.
Next, make sure you're well groomed. Cut your fucking hair. Trim that beard. Iron your clothes. Dress like a normal guy who has his act together. Nothing too flashy or trendy.
Don't ask her out. Your goal here is to simply get her contact info so you can set something up for the weekend so you can get to know her.

You don't walk up to a stranger and ask her out. That is almost impossible to pull off, even for the most experienced.
You find some excuse to chat casually with her. The weather, something funny you both see, the line you're waitng on. If desperate, compliment her dress/hat/bag. (Don't say "You're pretty" - that's too much too soon. Say "That's pretty")
If she cold-shoulders you, back off. You can try again tomorrow. If she gives you the slightest encouragement, keep chatting about nothing at all. At some point introduce yourself and get her name. Keep chatting. Eventually "It's been fun talking with you, but I don't want to keep you from anything. Would you like to meet for coffee sometime and continue the conversation?"
