Would taking up a martial art really improve my confidence and general self worth? I'm not looking to get ripped, or even be able to beat people up, just really need something to give me some sort of confidence to do things with my life and not view myself as a useless piece of shit.
Also, is it a pathetic thing to take up at 26?

You need a serious shake of the head. You know that you need self confidence, and that's because you've accomplished nothing. So you think that taking up martial arts will do it for you? It might.
It's good that you're looking for something through which to change your live. There's no magic here, and nothing special about martial arts either at this point in your life unless you feel that you need to learn how to defend yourself from an assailant.
This desire of yours is good put perhaps misdirected. What are you good at? What are you qualified to do? What's you're education? What country do you live it?
