So /adv/, I just locked myself out of my car.
How do I prevent this in the future

Make a copy of the key. Hide the key with lots of tape underneath a part of the car. I've done this and its saved me twice.

This, but you can buy a keybox that's magnetized. It's like a plastic matchbox with a magnet attached. insert key, stick to a wheelwell or somewhere not visible.
