Hey /adv/
What martial art can I pick up relatively quickly, so that I'm not such a huge pussy, and can defend myself / my protectorates in a conflict?
Thanks

are you a nation-state?
maybe military drill and tactical doctrines are more relevant for you than a martial art

being skilled in a martial art will not make you less of a huge pussy.
being taught how to manage conflict and be in control of a situation will do far more for that.
there are people in my life i could beat their ass without too much difficulty, but I would still be intimidated by their capability as a person. And people i know who could beat my ass without much difficulty will yield to me and my experience or perspective.
whatever you study, learn about yourself and about human conflict at least as much as physical skills.

This. Best is to learn how to avoid/get out of confrontation. Maetial arts aren't like in the anime, unless you are ufc pro level, almost no one gets out of a real fight unscathed.
That being said, I think best option is start exercising/lifting. Looking like you are in shape makes others less likely to want to fight, whether it's subconscious or not. That and I think it's quicker to get into shape/a bit fit than to learn a martial art.

Thats a good skill to have yes, but in life you cant always get out of confrontation sometimes the trouble comes to you and its good to know how to handle yourself when it does.

Learn how to do basic jiu-jitsu, but other than that boxing is more practical than most other martial arts. It's easy to learn, and simply effective. Apart from striking I would encourage you to know how to get out of chokes (if someone grabs you from behind), and how to do different chokes yourself.
