Traditional awnser would be to keep lurking. Enjoy all boards, not just /b/. /b/ was really fun many years ago but now really is unbearable to visit.

Please stop and take a moment to appreciate how much everyone ITT is being astonishingly nice to you. More than anyone was ever nice to me. I lurked from 2007 to 2010 before posting just to get the hang of it because I was scared of making an ass out of myself, but times have changed and internet culture is much more ubiquitous and widely understood so I'd probably tell you to lurk any particular board you're interested in for around a month before opening your mouth. Learn the pacing of responce time, and the culture/in-jokes. You want to be able to tell the difference between someone sarcastically teasing with a reference from a while back from someone genuinely arguing. It can be subtle.
Also you're going to see a lot of dicks by accident. It's just going to happen, even on sfw blue boards. If that sounds like something that makes you squeamish head for the hills now. In years past people would try and purge boards of unwanted outsiders by posting the most disgusting distasteful gore and pornography to make them want to leave. It's the same reason why the backseats of cop cars are all plastic- criminals will routinely piss and shit themselves when arrested to make cops not want anything to do with them. That still goes on on certain boards, but it's much more infrequent and much tamer.

Sure they have, but it's use may still be a little confusing. Primarily it's meant to be for quoting the person you're responding to so you don't have to keep looking back and forth at other posts, but it's also used (read: misused) to put words in other people's mouths or to say what you think they meant by a quote they said. It's also commonly used to tell a story.
